CMU ED Chances

So would Washington State University be a good safety instead of University of Washington?

Would these work as safeties for Computer Science?

Washington State University
UC Merced
Penn State

Yes - but don’t take UW off your list. It was just pointed out it’s not a safety.
Is WSU a home state school?

If so, think of what Merced will cost out of state? If you “like” WSU just fine, no reason to apply to Merced, etc.

This year’s SCS admission rate is 4.2% - 458 out of 10,820 applicants (just got this information from the virtual SCS orientation this past Sunday).

That sounds consistent with what is being seen elsewhere - an optimistic increase in applications based on “test optional”, but likely the same students accepted. At least the same number.

It’s a good sign that the salutatorian at our HS, who finished second to my D each year in AMC, with an otherwise very similar profile, but not 4 parent/grandparent CT/CMU degrees, just started at SCS.

I see they are publishing the number of “first choice” applicants - presumably ED. I wonder how many of those are RD to ED2 conversions, two weeks after MIT EA results come out. My D may face that choice.
