Hello :D ??
I really need help in deciding schools~~~ :b
I got accepted into CMU's MCS and Rice's Wiess School of Natural Sciences.
I plan to major in biological sciences.
Which school has a stronger bio dept/ program?
(All opinions appreciated :D plz help ~~ )

Rice does.

yeah probably rice… i chose cmu over rice, but for computer science

Mmm…Rice is more known for the biology for sure. I’d choose that if I were you. I just didn’t even apply to Rice because I’m really bored of Texas but it’s a very great school! Beautiful campus especially the science buildings. Lots of asians but pretty fun place. Houston weather is humid though but probably better than Pitts.

Hands down–if it’s absolutely 100% certain Bio is your focus, pick Rice!

Rice is a great institution --and if we are talking Bio, that is most certainly not a strength at CMU.

Easy choice- unless $$ is a huge difference or there’s something about the “fit” with the size of campus, location or student body that makes you uncomfortable at Rice.

Best of luck !

Definitely Rice. It’s one of the top pre-med schools in the US for example.

Do you think CMU would be a bit better at computational biology, though? I figure if you aren’t interested in med-school, that’s where biology is heavily headed…

Nope, I think Rice would still be better for computational biology. There is a an outstanding program in computational biology which combines faculty from Rice, Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions in the Medical Center with tons of money, faculty, and resources. And computer science at Rice is not for slackers.

[SCBMB: Ph.D. Program in Structural and Computational Biology and Molecular Biophysics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX](http://scbmb.bcm.edu/description/)

thanks for all the great opinions ~~

I went to Rice. Have son at CMU. CMU is better for CS. Rice is better for Bio. Rice has better winter weather. Rice has more stuff to do at spring break. CMU is larger so it’s easier to find people like you. CMU has frats, Rice doesn’t. This means social life at CMU sometimes revolves around frats whereas at Rice it doesn’t. Both schools place their graduates in jobs across the nation, but more Rice grads work in Texas and more CMU grads work in the northeast. Rice has football such as it is. CMU doesn’t have much in the way of spectator sports - not highly attended anyway. Rice has better dorms. Rice has more flexibility for changing majors. CMU is better known both because it’s larger and because of its location closer to the east coast and because of its strong CS and drama schools.
