CMU SHS or QSSS for Biology major?

My D got admission to CMU in MCS wirh an invitation to join either SHS or QSSS program. I would really appreciate it if anyone can help with the below questions

  1. SHS or QSSS makes sense for a Biology major? Is it worth the extra effort if you are majoring in Biology?
  2. Are these programs only for first year and then you select your major and go back to your stream of study ? Or you coninue with these programs even after selecting major?
