My son was accepted at Drexel and is considering the 5 year, 3 co-op option. We are trying to understand college costs and I do not understand how room and board works during the co-op periods. I left a message for Drexel but usually CC is faster. :)

The estimated cost of attendance lists $14,415 per year for housing and meals. Do students live on campus during the fall and winter co-op periods? If a student co-ops in another area or country do they still pay the $14,415 per year for room and board?

I understand that the paid co-ops are competitive. Are they impossible for computer science majors? My son is entering college with paid research experience and extensive unpaid internship experience, so I hope he would be competitive for the paid co-ops.

Thanks!

If your student co-ops during the fall/winter and co-ops somewhere where commuting from campus is feasible they’ll live on campus. If a student co-ops somewhere else they still pay full tuition. If they’re not living in Drexel housing, (or the new gimmick) Drexel-Approved housing, they do not pay housing costs.

Paid co-ops are competitive, period. But your student will know what he has to do to have the best chance of getting one - good grades, good connections within his department, previous work experience. Since your student has had a multitude of work experience he’ll/she’ll probably be fine. It is not impossible for really anyone to get a paid co-op unless you’re in a major that doesn’t lend itself to it (COMAD majors, English (my struggle), etc).

Best of luck!

I also got accepted into drexel and wanted to know that do i still have to pay my tuition fee during my co-ops. If yes then why because i would not be taking any classes and that does not make any sense at all.

The reason you pay tuition is because you are getting college credit for your coop. Just like any college internship
