Co-Op schedule

Hey there,

I will be attending NU this fall but I plan to do only two co-op's ( due to visa issues ,etc ). Would I still be in the 5 year program or will I graduate from NU in four years if do only two co-ops?

Thanks

you can graduate in four years if you only do 2 co-ops. i'm not sure exactly how it works but i know its possible. that will be a question for your co-op advisor to answer.

Fall = Sept-Dec, Spring = Jan-Apr, Summer 1 = May-June, Summer 2 = July-Aug

-You cannot graduate straight out of co-op (like a spring co-op for a May graduation)
-You cannot go on co-op twice in a row
-There is a December graduation, and a summer graduation
-You can petition to take classes during the freshman summer vacation
-It helps to have credits coming in (AP, transfer, etc)
-You can juggle things to take fewer co-ops with either summer vacation or summer classes, or you can switch from Version 1 to Version 2 if you're clever

Edit to add: There isn't a 4 year vs 5 year program. You graduate whenever you get around to it. NEU students generally only know for certain when they're a freshman and when they're going to graduate within one semester. Everything in between is fuzzy.

Hope this helps clear things up for people!

just an addendum, for most majors you get one half of summer off after freshmen year. For example, I will be a sophomore engineering student next year and I will have classes in Fall 07, Spring 07, vacation May and June, then co-op in July 08. You should look up curricula's on you individual major's website in order to know what your schedule for your degree will be. The one for the college of engineering is http://www.coe.neu.edu/studentservices/index.phtml?go=curricula.htm

Thanks for the responses.. Since I will be majoring in Indstrial engineering, it looks like we get Division A ( summer off freshman year and summer I off sophomore year ).

1) I"m thinking that I'll probably want to skip one 6 month co-op period and do either a study abroad or take classes instead... Would that work?

2) Can we skip out of the co-op period and take a vacation in that period instead of taking classes?

3) I'll talk to my co-op advisor.. When do stdents typically start meeting with the co-op advisers?

Thanks

1) You can generally do as many or as few co-ops as you want, unless your major has specific requirements. In order to skip a co-op, you just have to change your division with your dean. Also note that there are co-op opportunities abroad, but they're tough to get into. You also would not need to skip a co-op to do study abroad.

2) You cannot take a six month vacation, generally. That'd be considered a leave of absence from the university. You can, however, skip one or two summer sessions with no problems. (as I am currently doing because there's nothing offered that I can take!)

3) You can meet with your adviser at any time, they are assigned on day one (first by major, then alphabetically). Most students meet with their adviser in the fall of their sophomore year to take the required co-op class before going on their first co-op that spring. This is what you'd do if you're division A. For division B, you'd take the class in the spring of your sophomore year.
