hi-
I'm new to the board, but was hoping you could answer my question, as I can't figure out what to make of all this...
How much do admissions offices and coaches talk? Especially coaches for relatively minor sports?
I got a note from the yale coach (for a rather minor, non money generating sport) that said he had gotten a note from the admissions office and they were 'very excited' about my application, but with the disclaimer that he couldn't promise anything.
I know I'm not his top recruit, so how excited should I be? Or should I just forget about the note completely, as to not get my hopes up?

There was a good, long thread on this on the Parents Forum. It had "Likely Letter" in the title. Do a search and you will learn a lot about coaches/admissions etc. Bottom line- if you aren't high on the coach's list, there might not be any help in admissions.

I am Crew athlete and I was recruited by the coach. I even recieved an official visit and I was not listed. Basically you will be told if you are a listed and it only counts a lot during early action. It will help you some and get you over the hump if you are on the edge of admission. If you are not a qualified applicant then it is in no means an automatic admit. I applied early was not listed but the admissions office was aware of the coaches interest in me. The result was EA deferrment. I may still get in and it may or may not be because of athletics but is NOT an automatic in. Be happy that they are interested in you but do not hold it as the answer.
