I have auditions all February and my first is this saturday. My material is prepared and I feel confident about it. My problem is I have only been coached once for one hour with my material. Coaching is too expensive and the whole college applying thing has been expensive enough already. I can probably get in a couple more coaching sessions before my final audition at the end of February which is for my top choice. My question is how many applicants recieve extensive coaching? I am getting nervous that my lack of coaching is going to stop me from getting in. How important is coaching?

Don’t worry, some colleges actually don’t want students to get a lot of coaching before their audition; they prefer to see YOUR interpretation of a monologue. And some programs are notorious for actually coaching students during the audition – at one school, my D was asked to repeat her monologue as several different characters.

You will probably find that you get more confident and comfortable with your material with each audition. Good luck this weekend, and really, don’t worry about it – many students will not have had any coaching at all.
