Hi my name’s Jacob and I’m a high school student. I’m looking for colleges with good percussion programs but I’m not so sure I want to go all in with crazy intense conservatories like Boston or Juilliard or whatever. I’ve been looking around and a school that interests me is Coastal Carolina university. It seems to have everything I want in a percussion program along with lots of contemporary and commercial music options which I think could be really cool. Does anybody know anything about the percussion program there and how good it really is? I don’t want to get my hopes up, but it looks like I may have found the one.
I don’t know anything about Coastal Carolina… but if you want to explore programs in the region that are competitive but not Juilliard-competitive, you might want to look at VCU http://arts.vcu.edu/music/areas-of-study/woodwind-brass-percussion/percussion/
Also you might get more knowledgeable feedback by posting in the music major forum rather than the general search & selection forum. Good luck!
I don’t know anything about music but we visited the campus and it was nice in a middle of the road kind of way. It’s actually 10 miles inland from the coast and not much around other than highway and fast food. (that was what I didn’t like). They were super nice…gave me lots of swag to bring home to son who wasn’t with me. They are super enthusiastic and have sent emails too. So if interested, get on their mailing list.
What are your stats?
There’s a middle road between Coastal Carolina (which is a lower tier directional college, decent and somewhat selective, for students in the 2.6-3.0 range) and Juilliard etc.
For instance where look at Belmont, St Olaf, Lawrence, Concordia Moorhead. All have excellent music programs.
Correct me if I’m wrong but it appears that your looking for a college with a solid music department without sacrificing athletic culture or student life.
If you’re thinking about private schools and are willing to go out of state,
two schools to keep in mind specifically for percussion would be U. Denver and Loyola New Orleans.
The schools that MYOS listed above would also fit the bill.
