Cognitive Sciences or Health Care Administration?

Good evening ladies and gents,

So here I am facing a choice dilemma. I am thinking about getting into the Cognitive Science major at one of the UC Cal systems. My hope is to eventually graduate, continue on to pre med and go down the MD Psychiatry route.

But we all know how fickle long term plans are. My dilemma is this; what if I choose not to continue down the pre med route once I have graduated in the said major (i.e I lose heart, mid life crisis, alien invasion, etc) what are my job options in the Cognitive Sciences field? Google sadly is not very forthcoming about my query.

Another major that really interests me is a BA/BSc in Health Care Administration but am a bit wary of online universities. For me job placement is pretty important, therefore I am wondering if it would be more prudent to major in Health Care Administration since it seems to be all the rage these days apparently. Both of the aforementioned majors intrigue me immensely.

I know I can do premed regardless of which major I go for, I am simply interested in job options post graduation if I do NOT do premed. Thank you very much for your time and insight.

taking the administration degree might allow you to search for more jobs readily. As in when you are searching you can just type in the job title and lots will appear. it is harder to search for psych major, cognitive functions etc. If you are interested in psychiatry, you can still go to grad school for psychiatry. there is a MD route and the non medical route. both end up having mostly the same job with different titles. I think being an MD psychiatrist just allows people to bill their insurance for your time.

another thought is, do you want to be doing reception/clerical work all your life? can a psych major get a job as a receptionist in health care field?

I have always been under the impression how to land a GOOD administration (or an administration job in health care) you need to have a proper Masters degree as well, preferably an MBA. So that’s one route to consider.

I found a very generic list of jobs through UC San Diego. http://career.ucsd.edu/_files/CDPCogSci.pdf

If this is to be believed one can become anyone/anything after majoring in the Cognitive Sciences major (I wish there was a way of clarifying this claim). I don’t think Cognitive Sciences is considered a psych major per say since its touted as an interdisciplinary field (and we all know interdisciplinary majors are touted for their value in research, further education, etc) I don’t know about doing reception/clerical work all my life (who amongst us does?) since a lot of it depends on the salary, as there’s no other reason why I’d be considering college than to learn more about the aforementioned fields and making a good bit afterwards.

I’ll chillax for awhile and wait & see if anybody else offers their input as to what’s most feasible. Thank you very much for your help.
