Colby or Colgate?

I am trying to decide between Colby and Colgate. I am interested in studying Environmental Science, and both schools seem to have good programs for this. Also, I plan to study Education, which both schools offer.

Which of the schools is considered better? Likewise, how would you compare the two student bodies? Amount of outdoor activities/cultural activities?

Thanks.

Please? Some information must be floating around out there…

They are comparable. If I had the choice I would pick Colgate, I think they have more school spirit being in the Patriot League and Colby might be too small for some.

Okay, thank you very much. Tally up one for Colgate!

How about the frat scene? I hear that the Colgate frat scene is HUGE. Is this an overstatement, or true?

Thanks.

Both schools have forums, did you ask there?

Colgate is pretty traditional but if you like that I think it is awesome.

Both schools are of a similar and very high quality. I strongly suggest you spend time at each college, perhaps an overnight visit, and see where you feel more comfortable.

Hmm. So neither one is really any more reputable than the other? Interesting. Thanks!

What precisely do you mean by “reputable” and “HUGE”?

Both schools have fine reputations. Colgate has 1,100 more students at 2,900 and an equivalent or maybe slightly better student to faculty ratio- according to both schools’ websites. It also has a 25 sports DI varsity program as a member of the Patriot League for all sports and the ECAC for ice hockey and I think that it has an impact the feel and vibe of the campus.

About the Greek scene at Colgate, about 25% of students are involved with the 6 fraternities and 3 sororities and are able to join only for their junior and senior years. Yes, Greek life is an important aspect of the social scene. Underclassmen and many upperclassmen participate in their activities without being affiliated.

Of course it’s up to you to decide which of the two suits you better and so I concur with happy1 that a visit is in order.

Good luck with your search!

I have visited Colby, and am visiting Colgate in a few weeks. Which one leans more liberal on the political scale? Which one might offer a more hippie/alternative vibe? Luckily, I know that both schools are FANTASTIC for study abroad.
