Colgate or Wellesley

so... I didn't get enough money from Wellesley
but Colgate's financial aid package was the most that I got from all of the schools I applied to

I want to go to Wellesley but then I'll be in over 100k in debt for undergrad, which is completely ridiculous.

Their both good schools and small which I like but I just don't want to make a decision that I'll regret

And I know, I'll ultimately have to make the decision but any insight/comments would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the exact same financial situation with Wellesley. Zero financial aid -> over 100k in debt for just undergrad :/

Wellesley is everything anyone can ever ask for, but to put yourself in that much debt for just undergrad is financial suicide.
I'll be stuck at a school I absolutely hate!
But you have the option of a school you still like (I'm assuming you don't hate Colgate?)
So choose Colgate and make the best of it! :]
Good luck with your choice!

thanks ^^ that cheered me up
Good luck with your decision!

Yeah, unfortunately Wellesley effectively dinged you here... unless you can convince them to reconfigure the fin aid, you'll just have to live with Colgate as a wonderful "second choice"!

Contact Wellesley and see if they will match Colgate's package. It's worth it to go there over Colgate.

I agree with redcrimblue...^^^
However, if they do not meet it, go to Colgate it's great too.
2 awesome liberal arts schools you cannot go wrong with either.

Colgate is a fine school. Given that you are going almost for free, it sounds like a great bargain for a great school

Try to get Wellesley to match Colgate, because it is a fantastic school...but it's not worth being burdened by debt. If you end up going to Colgate you can get just as good an education, but you have to try harder to avoid being sucked into the alcohol-soaked social life there. If you are self-disciplined, you can graduate from Colgate with a great education and connections and no debt hanging over your head!

Don't worry! While Colgate might not be making Princeton Review's top 20 Stone Cold Sobe List..."Alcohol-soaked social life" is a MAJOR overstatement.

I really appreciate all the comments everyone. I'm going to Wellesley this week to see if they will match Colgate's offer. We'll see. I know Colgate isn't a bad school at all but there's just something about Wellesley...

well
i think wellesley is the better school
but
at least colgate is still an amzing school in itself

ide take colgate personally

i dont think u will be comprimising that much quality in education and u would be in a good financial situation coming out of college.

Colgate and Wellesley are both great schools. You really need to be practical about your finances especially if you are considering graduate school.

Ask Wellesley fin aid office if your aid/lack of aid package will change for your soph./jr./sr. year? Did they receive all you financial aid documents?...

In the end, you can get an excellent education at many different schools, but you need to be comfortable where you decide to attend.

Good luck in your decisions. Keep us posted on what you decide.

For awhile, I was having a really really hard time deciding between Wellesley and Colgate. After visiting both schools, I ultimately decided to go to Colgate because I felt it was the better school for me overall.

I really liked the extent of their commuity service activities when I visted. I was a little concerned about the lack of diversity at the school but I met so many friendly students and didn't feel uncomfortable on campus. The most important thing in making my decision was when I sat in on a class- I loved them! I sat in on a neuropharmacology class and extremely impressed with the level of work the students were doing! I also liked the fact that many seniors have a chance to publish their research! Also, Colgate was one of the first (I think the other is Vassar) colleges in the nation to establish the neuroscience program! Since that's what I want to study, I'm set.

College is a time to expand, and to change and grow, and I felt if I went to Wellesley, although I really liked to the school, I would be more "sheltered" and everything was a little too familiar. I'm really shy and I need to get out of my comfort zone and learn new things--so ultimately I decided that Colgate would make for the better and more challenging experience :)

You are the fourth person I know of that has received a less than stellar financial aid packet from Wellesley and has received other offers that were far, far substantial. What's up with that?? O___o

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is whether or not the benefits of minimal debt outweigh the benefits of attending Wellesley. I totally love women's colleges (I'm deciding between Bryn Mawr and Hollins right now) so I won't give my pretty obvious opinion lol. Both are good schools so you really can't lose. GL!

Whoa, Favelivern- that is one of the best post I've seen about Colgate... I love hearing new perspectives on how we're doing :)
