College Admissions Story for the B Student

I have had a really weird sudden change of heart, and I think it may be for the best. Let me explain-

I now have a very very strong desire to stay instate and go to UNC, and because of that I am seriously considering adding more instate options, and dropping some out of state ones. Here is what I was thinking.

UNCCH (High Reach)
NCSU (Reach)
UNCW (Reach)

APP STATE (Match)

ECU (Safety)
MIZZOU (Safety)

I know this is very random and you all reading this probably think I’m going crazy, but I almost feel like this is what makes the most sense, and this is how I would be happiest. The lone out of state school I left on the list is Mizzou. Mainly due to the fact that I really did fall in love with it and it is much more affordable than any of the other out of state options I was considering.

I haven’t informed my parents of this yet, but I’m sure they will be pretty happy considering the prices. I think I need to do a few more tours before I make a decision, but the point of this thread is to see my though process, which if you haven’t been able to tell, is all over the place.

PS: I know I said I wasn’t into the types of student APP has, but I have a really good friend who is going to be a sophomore there and I think I’m going to stay with him one night to see what I think.

Best of luck in your decision process. As a parent, I can say that instate tuition is blessing . My son is staying in state because of the great scholarship opportunities SC provides.

What happened to Alabama? And I think you should still seriously consider CofC.

@LBad96 my application to bama has been sent, but I’m considering it less and less, mainly due the fact that I will be just barely missing the scholarship cut off.

I’m still going to tour USC and CofC so we will see!! I do really really like Charleston so I may very well end up still applying there.

If you take the test once more you can send your updated results and that’s the one theyll consider for scholarships.

@MYOS1634 sadly it’s not my test scores, but my GPA. It’s a 3.4 W and I needed at 3.5 for anything they offer.

And, you can’t bring it to 3.5W by the end of 1st quarter? :frowning:

@MYOS1634 I could, but Alabama only uses Freshman-Junior year classes to calculate the GPA for scholarships.

Oh shoot. :s
I look forward to reading what you thought of USC and CoC. I loved both campuses - they’re quite different, but they’ve both got something catching and unexpected :)… or maybe it’s just me!
Do keep them on your list for now: just as you were sure about Mizzou 4 months ago, 4 months from now you may be keen on applying to out of state colleges…
By the way, have you considered Miami Ohio? University of Louisville? UTampa?

Update: on my home from the elon tour (about a 45 minute drive from my house) and I absolutely loved it. The school and the town just seem so prefect I loved the communications school. I am seriously considering early decision here, but I need to talk to my parents to see if it would be affordable.

Updates to come!!

BIG UPDATE:

Wow hey everyone its been a while since I’ve posted, so I thought I would come and update everyone quickly on whats been going on over the last month.

Elon- I toured Elon and loved it. It was one of those things where as soon as I drove up I knew I would be happy there. The discussion that is happening right now is whether or not to apply ED. The NPC showed enough aid to make it doable, but if for some reason some of the aid didn’t come through, it wouldn’t be affordable. I would be comfortable applying ED, and if I got in, submitting the deposit. FA isn’t released until April though, so I would want to wait until I got my final offer before withdrawing my other applications, incase the NPC did turn out to be incorrect. Right now I’m leaning towards EA, just because of how much I liked USC, and how much I like UNCW.

USC- Loved it. A lot. Felt very similar to UNCCH.

School started today!!

So, as it stands, here is what my list is looking like (ranked in order of preference, ignoring reach, match, safety)

  1. Elon/UNCCH/USC/UNCW
  2. NCSU
  3. College of Charleston
  4. Alabama
  5. Mizzou/UNCC

You replace Alabama and Mizzou with App State and ECU and you have what is probably the most common college list at my high school hahaha.

Glad you decided to visit USC and CofC. Only way to know is to visit. Good luck

Oh, and a little note to add.

My grandpa told me the other day that if I decided to take a gap year, he would pay for me to spend it in Israel (I’m half jewish.) I told him I would consider it. Not really sure how seriously I’ll consider it, but if anyone has any information on this I’d love to hear it!

Would you be enrolled in an international school or in a State School or in a Kibbutz? Do you speak Hebrew? Check whether there are SAT/ACT dates in Israel, too.

I know UNC-CH promotes the gap year, you can note it on your application. They will defer admission and offer some programs that will give you money to use that year, my daughter received info on that but we didn’t really look since she wasn’t interested in doing a gap year.

If I went the gap year route (pretty slim chance at the moment) I would probably make that decision after I have acceptances in hand and if I have the ability to defer. At this moment I don’t have any plan to defer applying to college. And no I don’t speak Hebrew, and probably would not be enrolled in a school in Israel.

Little bit of an update:

My parents seems to be in a state of delusion and are pretty convinced I’m going to get in to UNCCH, and if I don’t, it will be fine because “ill for sure get in to wilimington.” I don’t know how many times I have told them that I have slim-to-no chance of getting in to UNCCH, and UNCW is still a reach, but they are pretty convinced that’s what’s going to happen and haven’t really entertained the idea of me going to any other college on my list. Luckily I’m realistic, but I don’t know how they are going to react when those rejection letters arrive…

Are the willing to let you apply to any other schools in case you don’t make it?

@carolinamom2boys yes, reluctantly. I asked them to sign my transcript requests the other day and my dad said “I don’t know why we’re spending so much money applying to so many schools, I know Carolina is going to pull through.”

To be fair, my mom was an athletic recruit and my dad only applied to his local state school, so they don’t have much experience with the whole thing, but still.

Unfortunately, I think quite a few students are in the same situation as you. I’m amazed everyday at how competitive many schools, not necessarily high ranking, top tier schools are to get into. Unfortunately for my son, I fall on the pessimistic side , which makes it very hard to remain encouraging and positive through this whole process. Does your school have senior information night for parents? Maybe if they heard how competitive it is for even instate college admissions from a GC, they’d be more understanding. I can remember sitting last year at a junior information night and having the GC tell us the cut off for admission to one of the most popular instate universities was now approx. a 4.2 GPA. You could feel a collective moan rumble through the library. All too often I think parents think of their student’s statistics in a vacuum and forget about the other student’s who are also competing for admission. Good luck to you , and I hope everything works out the way that you hope.
