College Admissions Story for the B Student

I agree with Carolinamom2boys, maybe have your parents go to something at your school that might show them how competitive it is these days. Before my D’s Sr. year, the class before her, (2014), had such a low acceptance rate to UNC, and so many people wait listed until the last minute at NCSU, that people were in panic mode. I made my D look at so many schools and she applied to 8, and then we ended up with too many choices, but it could have been worse.

I agree with you that USC feels much like UNC, but is “away”, many people here go there (if they don’t get in CH) and they all take the attitude that they want to get away, and everyone I know is happy there.

@ITBgirl @carolinamom2boys we did go to a UNCCH and UNCW info session at my school last year. They went over the averages and such, but my parents still seem to think that due to our “connections” to UNCCH (grandfather was an ex-dean, know the past and present director of admissions, some other random things) that my stats will be over looked and I’ll be accepted. I’ve told them time and time again that it’s not that simple and we are going up against a ton of other students who also have “connections” to the school, but they seem to think it might as well be a safety for me.

Like I said, I’m realistic here so I’m not expecting even a slight chance at getting in, but I’m sure they are going to be more crushed than me when we hear back.

Little update:

My school has finally got my transcripts out! Also, kind of a random question, does anyone else’s school charge a fee for each school they apply too? My school has a $5 fee for each school. They say this fee covers the cost for naviance, transcripts, and rep visits. Just something interesting.

Anyway, here’s the REAL final list

UNCCH
ED: Elon
UNCW
NCSU
USC
Bama
Mizzou
UNCC

So some notes: took CofC off. Felt it was a little too artsy for me. Also went ED at Elon. Felt that my chances were so slim at UNC, it would be better to increase my chances at Elon.

Mizzou and Bama apps have been submitted, so hopefully I’ll hear back from them in a couple of weeks now that they have my transcripts.

I am very close to being done with all my essays, and it looks like I’m going to meet my self-imposed goal of having everything done and sent by September 31st.

Hey @ntk131998 are you going to be at Seahawk Saturday??

Oh, and you meant September 30th

@LBad96 I’m not, I’ve toured it twice now so I didn’t really see a reason to make another trip down for non-beach related reasons hahah.

And yes, September 30th. That always gets me.

So I feel behind a couple of days, but I did end up submitting all of my applications by October 4th! So only 4 days later than I hoped, so I’ll take it.

Also, some good news, got my first acceptance today!!! University of Missouri!

1/1

Congrats

CONGRATULATIONS!!! THat must feel really good: now, you KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO COLLEGE!!!

Congrats @ntk131998!!! It’s an amazing feeling and a true blessing to get that first acceptance in. My first acceptance was also on a Monday from a safety school. It took a weight off my shoulders, as it should for you. I imagine you’re also in a bit of disbelief!

Hopefully many more to come!!

Accepted to University of Alabama today!!!

2/2!

should still hear back from UNCC this month, but after that its the long waiting game.

Also just a sidenote: elon ended up not being ED. I did everything EA just to keep my options open

CONGRATULATIONS!

So my parents still won’t seem to get realistic. I was talking to my dad about doing visits to Alabama and Mizzou, and a second visit to USCarolina, and he goes “if you don’t get in to UNC then we can think about that, but I’m pretty confident that we won’t have too”

I’m not even sure what I can say at this point

Remember to visit UNCW!! I’d seriously consider that over Alabama.

So if you applied early to UNC you should hear by late Jan, you could do visits over spring break. Problem will be if you get wait listed, do you think your parents will still hold on to hope if that happens? Hey, maybe they are right and you will get in and nothing to worry about!

@LBad96 I have visited UNCW multiple times! It’s my #3 at the moment behind NCSU and UNC. Alabama is currently last on my list.

@ITBgirl that’s true, if I’m wait listed or deferred I bet I could probably convinced them at that point.

Ive sorta decided in my head that out of the 4 state schools I’ve applied too (UNC, NSCU, UNCW, UNCC(ordered in preference)) which ever the highest one I get into, i would go there and transfer to UNC (unless it’s state or W, then I would consider staying), but I’m still very much considering USC because of the close to in state cost I should recieve. Elon has dropped down a little due to price, and mizzou and bama are just really far.

You would be full pay at Alabama, where the cost of attendance for OOS students is $40,000+ a year. If your parents don’t want to pay more than $25,000 a year, I’m curious why you applied there or to any school where the NPC is so out of that range.

Which school did you apply to at NCSU? I feel good for you getting in Wilmington, and possibly CH, I do think your HS will help you for those 3 schools more than some people understand. USC in state tuition is harder to get than it looks on the website, my daughter did get the McKissick Scholars Award but on paper I thought she would get the even larger one. And read the small print there, they have three levels, “instate, half of out-of-state, and reduction”.

@LucieTheLakie my dad encouraged me to apply to Alabama after we went to a presentation at my school one night. He was fully aware of the cost and told me it seemed like it may turn out to be a good fit (Elon as well), so I went with it. I never really questioned it being outside the budget. I think the $25k may be more of a “what they want to pay” rather than a “way they can pay”, but I’m not sure. It doesn’t look like its going to matter either way, since chances of me going there are pretty slim at the moment.

@ITBgirl I applied at as a Poli Sci major I think, but I could be wrong.

That’s true about my high school, it’s just so hard to gauge how much that may actually help.

I’d like to think that the strength of my high school definitely helped me get into everywhere I did, especially where I am now. If your high school is strong, then you’ll definitely get a leg up in the process.
