college allowance

My book/incidental expenses stipend from my scholarship adds up to around $1300 per semester. My parents gave me $300 to start a bank account for college...and they give me orange juice, milk, and Gatorade when it's on sale at the commissary (it's their excuse to visit me). I'm glad they don't have to give me any money.

I think I've spent about...$300-350 since I've come here. However $200 of that was spent buying an iPod from a girl in my building, and $40 was for a whitewater rafting trip.

I have a small meal plan, but all my spending money comes out of my pocket pretty much. Last year it was mostly my graduation money (my parents had to chip in about $100 at the end of the year, but that was it). This year I have an on campus job that pays pretty well so I should be covered.

I don't get an allowance, I'm not 13.

Um..
Tuition and books? Loans.

Rent? Loans. and savings. and money from my future job.

Spending money? whenever I don't eat.

Whenever I run low on supplies, I go home and 'take' my mother shopping. :)

Right now my spending money is everything I saved working over the summer, since I don't want to burden my parents by asking them for money all the time. It should be enough to get me through the year, but I know my parents would chip in if I needed it.

When i was at a summer program this summer my parents gave me $150 a week for the five weeks. I spent it.

who here goes to a private in a big expensive city like DC, NY, or Boston...how much do you guys spend per month?

Provided I go to the state school my allowance first semester will be a Ford Escape hybrid...

Oh, they make it so tempting.

But not really :P.

i go to BC. Ive been here like 3.5 weeks. Ive spent like $25 and have gone into the city twice. Boston can be really expensive if youre planning on going into Boston once a week you should probably plan on 100-150 a month at least...

I dont plan on asking for an allowance since I managed to get enough spending money for pretty much my entire time in college. My grandparents gave me some money and I had some from an internship which adds up to nearly 10k. I have 8k left which should be enough for 4 years.

i wonder how much the people actually going to school in the city of boston @ bu must be spending per month

I'm in the city of Boston at Northeastern and I don't spend that much per month...(and no allowance). I have enough money saved from working that I can do things I want to, but I try not to spend too much money. Some kids do go shopping on Newbury Street regularly and that definitely adds up but it's also really not necessary. I'm not into the whole clubbing idea...

I don't know. I guess it's definitely possible to spend a lot but I'm in college. I see that as a time I'm not supposed to spend a lot, because then it goes into more student loans (and college students really aren't supposed to live in luxury. I'd never in a million years ask my parents for an allowance, because they're already getting in dept send me to college and I don't think I need it or it's their obligation to give it to me.

I went to BU and didn't require an allowance (and I still can't believe that some people would accept one). You're 18 and you're big enough to spend what you earn.

I went weeks where I didn't spend any money other than the few dollars it took to take the T to work. I also went through periods where I spent quite a bit of money, but it was all with my own money.

Just because you're in the city doesn't mean that you need to spend a lot of money on things. A workstudy job can cover essentials. Beyond that, you just adopt your lifestyle to your own budget--if you don't want to spend any money, you can easily live off your meal plan and there's plenty of free entertainment on campus (let alone off). I tended to spend more and took my girlfriend out to dinner often, but I also had my own business and made enough to cover it.

I'm a freshman this year.

My tuition is covered by scholarships, as are a lot of my other expenses. My parents pay for the rest of my books, housing, and fees. I got a $1500 allowance for this year, plus graduation and birthday presents from various family members and friends. With it, I bought all my school and dorm supplies, and it'll also be for any expenses that I have while I'm here. I don't work.

Next year, however, I will be working, and my parents won't give me any spending money (though they'll still pay for books, etc.) This is because I have several 1 time scholarships that I won't have next year. Also, I didn't want to work my freshman year, so I could get used to college life.

Hmm, well this year, I am working 2 jobs and going to school ( only 9 hours though) SO, my "allowance" is what I am earning to go towards my bill when I go off to school next year. I plan on not working (at all if I can help it.) so then, my allowance will be probably whatever extra I have after housing, tuition, mealplan books, etc. The money I am earning now goes towards my bills when I'm in school (car note, car insurance, computer bill & cell phone) Essentially, I'm saving now so I can pay those while I'm in school. lol. Sorry for the rambling-- I'm a tired girl!
