So I’m a military kid and I feel like I could probably write a pretty good essay on this. However one of my counselors told me that almost every military kid writes about being a military kid… So I’m not sure. I want to stand out to schools and I really don’t know what to do about this. THANK YOU!
If you can develop a coherent and effective essay about a given topic that provides insights about yourself as an individual and a student, then you can write a solid essay. Almost anything can be personalized and shifted away from the “norm”, although that will only happen if you put in the time and effort required to do so. Otherwise, you may be left with an essay that many other applicants have written. Nobody here can tell you whether or not to write/use your topic. It all depends on what you make of it.
Just curious about your counselor - does he/she see a huge percentage of students like you from military families? It may very well be that your counselor sees more than his/her fair share of military kids because of the school you attend happens to be near a military base. So, it may depend on how you stand out from your peers, if you are planning to apply to the same schools they also want to apply to.
