What are the most important things you can do to come off as an incredibly interesting student and stand out from the crowd to impress the admissions officers? Specifically in the selective liberal arts college admission process?

I’ll bite, but just one answer, for now: really know what that college is about, what it offers you and how you fit, academically and on campus. Don’t assume. Do the research. Otherwise, how would you even guess what is relevant to those adcoms?

To come off as interesting and stand out, you have to actually BE interesting and stand out. That means having an unusual sense of self - who you are, what you want and have to offer. Most people are still figuring that out when they apply to college and are doing what everyone else is doing to make sure they don’t miss something. That’s fine…but then you are part of the herd, not someone who stands out. It’s always risky to ‘go rogue.’ You may stand out for the wrong reason - but for people who are following their own path, they wouldn’t have it any other way, and if the school doesn’t want them as a result, they are prepared to live with that.
