she will have to do work study

If you don’t qualify for aid, then she will not be given Work Study. WS is a need-based aid, and only given to those with “need.” Often it’s only given to those with low EFCs because it’s a limited aid.

my daughter is taking a strong liking to Alabama. She just told me this week that they get 2 days for college visits this year (more senior year) so we will probably visit soon.

Let me know if you’d like the Honors College to set up a supplemental visit with profs and dorm tour.

^ Thanks. I’m aware was just using the term loosely as she’ll need to get a part-time job to pay for personal expenses, etc. Thanks to having to work throughout high school, I’m pretty confident she isn’t going to choose the more expensive college route the more we look at schools on the list of possibilities.

Hi there, so if you’re in Texas, you might want to convince her to stay in the state. The reason is because of two particular schools: TCU, look into the Chancellor’s Scholarship for full tuition, and SMU, look into the President’s Scholarship for a full ride. I will be taking up SMU’s offer of the latter this coming fall. It covers tuition, room and board, AND study abroad (the flights and the tuition at the the university of your choosing).
I also applied to USC (SoCal) for merit aid. I received half tuition there from the Presidential Scholarship. NMF’s are automatic half tuition there.
All these schools are not automatic. If your daughter is impressive enough, which she does seem to be, then you’ll be extended an invite for the scholarship/interview weekend. The interviews carry varying amount of weight in deciding who will receive the scholarships out of the finalist pool.

The student still needs to work for the money. However, an on-campus employer (or some eligible other non-profit employer) hiring a work-study student will have the student’s pay subsidized, so such an employer will prefer to hire work-study students over similarly qualified non-work-study students.

@ref1ections Thank you for the suggestions. My D is adamant about leaving Texas. I asked her to reflect on that (I’d love for her to stay closer to home), and though she really likes Texas and our city, she wants to go out of state for college for new experiences. I suggested USC, but she has no interest in going to California (weirdo!).

Thanks again all! We’ve visited 9 schools and used our impressions of those and our research to drastically narrow down her list. She really liked and would be happy attending 2 of the schools that we visited, and even if she doesn’t make NMSF, both schools will be affordable after automatic merit. Since from a purely financial perspective, I think she can do better (i.e., win a full ride), those 2 are her financial safeties. So she’ll also apply to a relatively large number of competitive full ride schools that meet all her criteria. We have 3 competitive full tuition schools on the list, but those may fall off, since the 2 financial safeties are really good fits, so I think the competitive full tuition schools may be wasting application fees.

I’m so glad she and I are completely on the same page. We even had the same reaction to every school we’ve visited. I’m optimistic all will work out although this feels like playing the lottery. I hope we win big.
