Hi, My son is completing his Junior year in High School. He would like to play basketball in College. He is getting a lot of invitations to basketball “Prospect” camps. These range from $70-$200 and last a few hours. Does anyone know if these camps help you actually get a roster spot and an offer? I have read that most of these are really income generating events to pay for the assistant coaches salaries. (But this might just be the case for other sports) My son has had 2 tryouts already (1 D2 and 1 NAIA that did not require any $) Anyone have any experience if attending these camps will really get you recruited? TIA
Yes, mostly true.
The tried and true method is being seen at the various regional AAU tournaments around the country, with your son’s AAU team, which ultimately culminates with the National AAU Championships in Orlando.
But there are instances where a prospect can “WOW” a coach at one of these summer prospect camps. Rare though.
If you are interested in potentially working with a consulting firm staffed by former college basketball coaches who can give an objective and honest evaluation of son’s talent level and recruit- ability at various schools you may want to consider Sportmatch, which is the firm we used when my son was being recruited for football. They have placed a number of basketball student athletes at selective academic schools, and is run by Lane Odom, son of former Wake Forest head coach Dave Odom. If you are interested PM me and I can put you in touch with their basketball consultants. They also do a great job of identifying the right camps to attend where they know certain coaches will be attending
