Yes, this retake needs to happen this summer.
This occurred in sections 8 and 9. Presumably the playing field was level for sections 1 through 7. Maybe they can use just those scores for this particular sitting.
I do agree with that entirely. I am encouraging my daughter to take the ACT so that there will be no question.
And a retake this summer, while the kids are still fresh, is very important to give to them.
“For those who say that the rooms with 20 min time limits will have scores that (should) stand, what about the kid who justifiably thought that he/she had 25 minutes, but got caught short when it turned out that they had only 20 min?”
Exactly. And apparently there were also instances where kids were told at the beginning that they had 20 minutes, so they went at that pace only to be told toward the end that they would have the extra time. This is not automatically an advantage for those kids, because if they go back to answer questions they skipped, there is a real chance they might miss some of those and end up worse off for the extra time.
My son was the first person in his group to raise his hand and point out the error in his book, and it was before they started working on the section. The proctor for his group insisted on the 20 minutes, thankfully. However, there were 170 people taking the test at his test center, and they were broken out into many rooms. Who knows what happened in those other rooms.
Very glad I also signed him up for the ACT next Saturday. At least there is a chance he will accomplish something.
I fail to see how a REQUIRED retake can be better than an OPTIONAL retake. IMO, they should allow those who wish to retake to take it during the summer. Those who don’t choose to retake should be graded separately based on whether they received 20 or 25 minutes. Students must decide whether to retake before scores from the original test come out. Forcing everyone to retake will make many unhappy and cause logistical nightmares.

I am just hoping they can work some formulas into this… I am not in the mood to do a retake this summer… Especially because of the COLLEGE BOARD’S MISTAKE. My proctor gave us 5 minutes extra for section 8 ONLY, yet in many of the booklets, it said that they had 25 min for section 9! So, that’s a problem right there. Secondly, other students in my testing center were given 5 minutes in BOTH sections. Plus, people kept walking in and out of each classroom, talking to proctors about how they could solve this issue, and this created a large distraction. It is just so unfair.
The College Board is testing our proofreading skills, yet they failed to proofread themselves.
I was more confident in that test than any other, I took it four hours away from my home because I signed up late, and as much as I would absolutely love them to count my grade, I do not see it happening. My test center had no issues involving the timing of the test, but as it is a national issue I believe that they are going to cancel all of their scores. I sympathize with all of you who also took it. This could end up compromising the entire company.
@dennis052798 It sure could. The magnitude of the waste factor in time and resources is overwhelming. And if they decide to scrap the whole thing, they’ll have to offer a retake in a very timely fashion, or people who spent big dollars on study courses might come seeking a reimbursement. Sorry for your trouble. This is messy, messy, messy.
I highly doubt they are going to re-test everybody. The cost would be staggering and the timing issues would be unworkable. It will be interesting to see what happens. My guess is nobody is going to be told to re-test and they are going to come up with some other statement soon, but …that is just MY guess.
When will we find out of CollegeBoard’s decision?
^ I guess within the next 48 hours.
Sometimes it gets messy to do what is right. No one ever said doing the right thing is easy. (In this case, the right thing is to cancel the scores because of how much uncertainty and offer testing date in August/September).
UPDATE: The College Board posted an update saying that the affected sections of the test will not be scored.
NEW UPDATE REGARDING SCORES!!!

What about those who were doing the math section with 25 minutes when it was suppose to be 20
In test:
Hmm, I felt like I did well on the last 3 sections. That’s great!
Goes home:
-oh wait a misprint and posts all over CollegeConfidential…oh, no…it’s a nation-wide problem-
Now:
Aaaaaaaand there goes my scores. Gg. Thanks a lot, Collegeboard. Please learn to proofread on a a test with sections upon sections about proofreading.
Let us all complain to College Board and demand for free retake! This is an asinine decision.
How will this even provide us with an accurate representation of our scores?! There were always 3 sections to provide some sort of balance to students! Taking out an entire section is going to screw some students up completely! I’m very shocked because I called the college board yesterday and they told me that they were more than likely going to give an optional retest on June 20. I wonder what made this dramatic change! I’m extremely disappointed in the way the college board handled this. Now the students who felt they did well on reading are going to be punished more severely because there’s going to be a smaller margin for error!
