Not all schools have a policy. At my school, it’s based on class. I’ve been allowed an 89 in some classes, an 83, a scientific, one that was so basic there were no trig functions, and a few times I wasn’t allowed one at all.

(Note, I’m specifically talking about math classes. I’m engineering so I’ve taken a ton).

TI89 is likely to be banned from most Calculus sequence classes (Calc I-III) because it does integration and derivatives.

Obviously the 89 is popular among math and engineering majors for upper level classes for the same reason it’s banned in the lower level classes.

I know my Calc classes recommend the TI-83+, and I’m pretty sure the 89 is banned. There should be somewhere on your college’s website where it says what you’re allowed. If not, email a professor and ask.

Thanks everyone! I am not looking into engineering at the moment but it may a possibility. For Calculus here, an 84 or 83 is allowed, but 89 is not allowed for lower level.

So basically, for NOW I am between 83 and 84.

Is there a price difference? Go with the cheaper one.

I’ve never noticed anything “slow” about the 83, and I’ve used a friends 84. As far as I can tell, there is no noticeable difference (especially for anything you’d be doing in the basic calc sequence).

I’ve had my 83 since 7th grade, and it’s somehow survived since 2002. Never got the 84 since (according to wikipedia) it came out 2 years later.

84 is faster and has more memory. You don’t notice this though unless you’re running apps or custom programs. Calc apps are pretty much only good for games, so if you don’t care to calculator program, get the 83
