College colloquium

Do the topics for this change every year? Can you give me an idea of what you took, what you know about other sections and what recommendations you have for others looking at this school? Thanks!

take a Colloquium class, as that has been introduced only in the last year. My understanding of it is that it will be an opportunity for professors to choose to teach a unique class they wouldn't normally teach. I would expect that some professors offer the same choice from year to year, while others may choose different courses to teach from year to year.
Looking at the Colloquium choices from the standpoint of someone who couldn't take them because I wasn't a Freshman, they all looked quite interesting. My advisor, for example, taught a course on 1960's social movements. If you want to check out the offerings from last fall, click here:

Let me know if you have any other questions. I have really enjoyed my time at Willamette and would love to talk you into it :)

Thanks! I really appreciate the offer for additional help too. My twin daughters will be visiting in April during their spring break and I will be coming with them. They are currently Juniors. Both are interested in a BS in bio and a possible carreer in veterinary medicine. Anyway...we would love to have someone outside of the admissions office who would be willing to answer questions honestly. The colloquium courses all sound interesting for a variety of reasons. Thanks again for the input.

Hi history,
My d was just admitted to Willamette. We live in a nearby state, and many of our top students go to Willamette. It is very highly regarded here, and the finaid office is generous. Her acceptance package was very warm and inviting!

I know a fair number of current students, so if you need to connect with a particular major let me know. I might know someone you could talk to.

Thank you riverrunner! Big congrats to your D.

We are looking forward to the April Oregon visit and I think it may move Willamette up on both of my DD's lists. Right now it's on the "interesting schools that our mom thinks we should look at" list. The beauty of the campus, the pre-vet club and the strength of the program should impress them. When it comes time to make a decision having students to contact would be really nice so thanks!

I'm in and out of town right now, historymom, so not a very good communicator! I do know a junior at Willamette who is a bio major (premed). She also runs XC and track, if that is of interest at all.

Thanks, when we visit in April it might be nice for my girls to meet a pre-med student who can sort of relate to what they may be going through by attending Willamette. My girls run track too but only as a training program for soccer. Still that would be interesting. Thank you for taking an interest!

Willamette has a strong DIII track and XC program. I don't know about their soccer teams, but it wouldn't be hard to research from their website. I think very highly of the running coach. The team is successful, well-coached, and mutually supportive, from what I've seen at a distance. You could check track times, if that's at all of interest...

The ec's she thinks she'd like to continue with in college are: soccer...at any level, concert band, horses and maybe some theatre production (stage crew/lighting). It would be great if she got a try-out with a DIII soccer team but she said just last night "...I hope whoever the new track coach is doesn't expect us to treat it likes it's our life." :-) Most of the kids in track here are there because they are conditioning for their fall sports.

Do you have a recommendation on where we should stay or eat dinner? Our current reservations are at the Phoenix Inn Suites South. Thanks

Hi historymom,
I don't know the area well enough to recommend restaurants or hotels, but this is a small, friendly school. If you contact the admissions office, I'm sure they will help you.

You should definitely ask for a meeting with the soccer coach (and track, if that's at all on her radar). This is a GREAT way to get insight into the school, and really personalize the visit. She will not be asked to "try out" on this visit. It's too early. You are free to contact the coach at any time (I recommend email), and to meet coach on campus, even though your D is a junior. You can also ask to meet with a current soccer player and/or runner who can answer questions about time commitment, academic/sport balance, and so on. Don't expect to hear an objective view of coach, since this player will be hand-picked :) You can also ask to meet with music/theater profs, of course!

Are you visiting other schools in the Portland area on this trip? Salem is close (45 minutes) to Portland which has MANY options for restaurants and hotels. I know you want to get a feel for Salem, but if your itinerary allows, you may want to move on to Portland fairly quickly. Personally, I don't mind Salem, but many people turn up their noses at it.

We are visiting the University of Portland and Pacific University in Forest Grove on the same trip. I'll definitely pass on what you said about meeting with the coach to my D. She would LOVE to be able to play as long as it doesn't interfere too much with academics and obviously provided she makes the team.

It has been so nice swapping messages with you. I appreciate so much your taking the time!

No problem- we could PM, but some of this may be relevant to others interested in Willamette, I guess! You may know that U of P has one the best women's Division 1 soccer teams in the US. I love other things about UP, but the sports scene was more competitive than my daughter was looking for. I know nothing about Pacific Grove!

Emailing the soccer coach at Willamette very soon would be a good idea. The coach may want to see a brag sheet of academic and athletic accomplishments in order to establish if your daughter is a match.

Best wishes!
