’ I still pay California state taxes so hopefully that means she could apply as a resident . "
NOPE. in order to be considered a resident her HS transcript would have to be sent from a Calif school.
In addition, they require that parents currently live in Calif, and will require proof in the way of utilitlies bills, etc, etc if there is any question regarding state residency.
California residency for UC tuition purposes requires a physical presence (1 year prior) not just paying taxes so something to consider if she does show some interest.
Macalester–long journey refers to change of flights. If you can get a direct or non-stop from Japan to an international airport close to Macalester, then not as much of a hassle as I thought.
Just reading up on some comments about Bard & Sarah Lawrence financial concerns. Use google. One quote that stays in mind “Sarah Lawrence needs every tuition dollar it can get.” I do not recall the source. I read it about a year ago. Easy to find. Same about concern with Bard students transferring out after one year.
Wesleyan University may interest your daughter.
P.S. January 9, 2014 Inside Higher Education article Bard had only enough funds on hand for 2 weeks of operating expenses. Downgraded by Moody’s.
@Gumbymom by Thanks. I, of course, am a booster but less alluring without the instate discount.
@Publisher is this a typo…because this was four years ago and Bard is still running! Long after two weeks later!
@Publisher Yes everything from Japan is multiple stops I’m afraid. Boston, NYC. Only LA would be convenient so we may have to let that criterion go. I say yes to Wes! I tried to get my son, who’s going to film school, interested in going there. But he wanted a more production-focused program.
Your daughter won’t be a resident of California…your family doesn’t LIVE in California.
What kind of CA state taxes do you pay? Since you don’t live there, this would be as a non-resident filer…right?
Not a typo. They borrowed money, but at a higher interest rate due to the investment rating downgrade Moody’s or S&P . (The Moody’s downgrade was 3 grades!) Has been talked about for years.
Apparently Bard does have an endowment but it is almost entirely restricted to graduate programs. Bard relies on donations to pay its bills. Had to delay a loan payment to a bank because a donor’s $7 million donation was late.
Those 3 qualifications would be met by around 80% of the top 100 colleges in the country, reel life. Most places have good academics, far more diversity than when we attended, and lots of students committed to social justice. Almost every place has both psychology and dance programs. What is it about Swarthmore that she likes? It is very unlike USC or Barnard.
@menloparkmom Well that makes that easy. No UC app to fill out! One less thing to worry about. Thanks.
It has been a while since I made the trip, but aren’t there still nonstop flights between Tokyo and Washington, or Minneapolis, or NYC, and maybe other cities?
@roycroftmom Well we don’t live in or near Tokyo, so it’s more like Osaka to LA or SF and then you go from there.
That is rough, reel life. The kids from Asia don’t get home much at my kid’s school. Just not worth the effort and time required for the trip. I would be looking seriously at West Coast schools. The Claremont consortium would be convenient. Santa Clara too.
@roycroftmom Honestly, she’d probably be just fine at 80% of the top 100 or, for that matter, 300 colleges which is what makes this difficult to narrow down. Give her a stack of books and a coffee shop and she’d probably be ok. She loves to study and go to ballet. She thinks she’d like to go into community service or mental health. But when I say things like “what about Oberlin?” Her response is, “isn’t that like 70% white people?”
Scripps. She would love Scripps.
My son went to a New England boarding school with a healthy number of students from South Korea. No complaints about missing home, but they were very wealthy & many seemed quite familiar with New York City. (Maybe they had second homes in Manhattan.)
But I agree that any California school would offer a significant amount of relief from long trips.
Anyone familiar with SOKA University of America & its relation to Asia/Japan ? Very wealthy, but also very small enrollment.
@thumper1 Non-resident filer. Correct. So seems UCs are off the list. I’m getting way more help than I ever anticipated when I made this post! Thanks to everyone.
@publisher We visited Soka. Seems kinda remote and cult-y. Was enthusiastic prior to visit, zero interest after. California schools are most convenient but remember, her brother is already going to be in Boston and once they are both in school, we may be inclined to move back to the US and where in the US is an open question. So it’s conceivable we could all end up on the East Coast which is why I’m sorta encouraging that idea. But @roycroftmom I will definitly check out Scripps which hasn’t been on our radar.
OP, so can you tell us her stats?
SAT scores? GPA?
did she take the PSAT and if so how did she do on it?
She is a high stat student.
