College Decision: UMASS Amhest or WNEU for Engineering

Hello,

Due to issues with my application I was just admitted into UMASS last week and was given a two week grace period to decide on whether I’ll accept their offer. I’m currently debating on UMASS or WNEU.

At UMASS I would be dorming where as at WNEU I can commute with very short ride. I understand a benefit of dorming is the accesibility of facilities but as WNEU is so close I could also get to campus rather quickly if I commute there. Commuting to WNEU also saves me roughly $2000-3000 dollars.

WNEU’s class size is smaller and has a better student to teacher ratio making its education more intimate. I have family that goes there so they could help me adjust to college life and help me network However I have many friends going to UMASS which is very enticing.

I’d like to hear other peoples opinions, as all my friends are biased towards umass and my family is biased towards wneu due to them attending wneu.

Also, due to my late admissions I wasn’t able to secure a spot in UMASS’s honors program and did not receive the dean’s award. I have relatively equal stats if not better than my friends who got into the honors college so that was very disappointing. At WNEU I am already accepted into the honors program.

Isn’t WNEU more expensive, being a private school? Reputation-wise, UMass-Amherst’s name probably carries more weight in the engineering world than Western NE.

You can apply to the Honors College after your first semester.

Okay, I’ve picked wneu. Thanks for your opinions!
