College Decision (UT Austin vs. UTEP)

My two choices are The University of Texas at El Paso and The University of Texas at Austin. For UTEP they have given me a $16,000 scholarship, which should cover most of the $24,000 total. I live in El Paso and so I will not have to pay for room and board or food. As for UT Austin, they have given me a $40,000 scholarship, which I think covers all tuition for 4 years. However, I will have to pay for room&board, food, gas etc. Should I stay home and be in less debt, or go to the more prestigious college? (I plan to major in Electrical Engineering)

It is rather likely that Austin will have more companies coming to recruit electrical engineering interns and graduates than El Paso, due to the concentration of companies in Austin and its national prominence. You may want to stop by El Paso’s career center and ask which companies come recruiting for electrical engineering interns and graduates there (if you visit Austin, do the same there).

But what would be the net cost of attendance for you at each school? You do not really want to go into large debt.

Both schools have ABET accreditation for electrical engineering. Austin’s higher entrance selectivity may allow it to teach some courses at a faster pace or in more depth, but ABET accreditation is a high enough minimum standard that you should be able to get a quality engineering education in any ABET accredited engineering degree program.

Like ucbalumnus says definitely look into the specific program for the details. UTEP’s origins are engineering so maybe it can offer the opportunities you’re looking for. If you qualify for any other financial aid, UT may be worth looking at just for the change of pace and culture. You’ll have to balance that with having the security of your local support system.

MarkChavez: I have the same dilemma too!!. Haha well Ut Austin only offered me 20,000 wich only covers some tuition, but I got around 12,000 financial aid in total. UTEP offered me 16,000 as well. I still don’t know what to do. I really want to go to UT, but all the costs are not covered and I am really poor :(.
