Hey im finalizing my college essay which i THOUGHT i had finalized until just recently, anyway the essay is a personal essay about me and my achievemnts, and i want to open it with a quote in a foreign language that i know, and i was wondering if anybody knows of a good quote/opening statemnt. My essay basically makes me look like a very international/well rounded/kind/very diverse person. so a quote/statemnt along those lines.

If you wish to use a quote in a foreign language, then you must make sure that quote was spoken in that language originally, correct? Otherwise, if it is a translated quote, then such a usage shows pomposity, and nothing more. Therefore, for us to help you, you need to tell us which foreign languages you know.

I speak russian fluently, i feel that even with an english quote i can properly translate its meaning into anything. The problem i have is with the quote more than the translation, even something i can't use can get me on my way. Thanks for responding :)

I would advise against putting in a quote after writing the essay. The chances are high it will not fit well with the rest of your essay and will sound awkward.

Thats a good point, but I'd still like to try it out and see if it works, im not dedicating myself to adding one its just an option im trying. In my essay i empasize fluency in three languages, in the opening i have a 3 line conversation, each in a different language. I dont really like it though, so im just looking into other options.

Ah I see. But what I really meant is this: if you translated an English note into Russian, and the person reading the quote realizes that the quote is not natively Russian, but actually a translated English note, what would that reader think? He/she will think that the note was put in Russian for the sake of putting it into a foreign language! And that certainly does not look good.

True, true, but what i want to say doesnt necessarily have to be some quote, rather a general statment, maybe a short reiteration of my thesis, i'd prefer if it were a made up statement rather than words comming out of a famous persons mouth. so im not really taking something and transating it, rather taking something already written, and expressing it in another language, as an attention grabber and then build into it in my already written essay.

Oh I understand now. You don't want a true quote, but rather a saying that appears as a quote. That makes more sense. Perhaps I can think up of something for you...

yea im just sitting here playing with words/phrases seeing what i can do, thanks for your time i apprecate it. I think i'll just sleep on it and try again tomorrow morning in class or soemthing, if anybody thinks of something or has any questions my AIM is XSuubieX, good night

Suubie, your essay topic sounds very insightful and interesting, and I'm sure you're not lacking in creativity all on your own! You don't need random internet kids to give you ideas. I had a quote I was going to send you, but I think it would be a disservice to you to deny you the opportunity to think of something yourself. If you do get in, would you want to always wonder whether it was the creativity of a different person who tipped you from denied to admit? Or if you were rejected, once again whether it was the fault of a different person? That's just my two cents; I hope you're not angry at me for voicing it. You seem like a very nice person, and I wish you the best of luck during RD!
