College fair haiku

<p>I experienced several zen moments last night while representing my alma mater (small northeast LAC) at our local high school college fair. These inspired my first attempts at haiku (with apologies to those who <em>really</em> know what they're doing with this poetry form).</p>

<h1>1</h1>

<p>Student approaches
He has only one question
"Are winters bad there?"</p>

<h1>2</h1>

<p>Mother, put down that
big load of shiny brochures.
Your son's in eighth grade</p>

<h1>3</h1>

<p>Worried dad wonders
if daughter will suffer taking
SATs six times</p>

<p>flatlander</p>

<p>My husband and I used to do college fairs for our alma mater. Your haikus are right on target</p>

<p>How about this?</p>

<p>Our arch-rival college
Has the booth right next to ours
This is quite awkward.</p>

<p>From a few years ago. (They're not mine.)</p>

<p>pitt
i’ve never been here.
supposedly it’s a nice
city with much art.</p>

<p>wesleyan
stoner rich kids are
all politically correct
with big suvs</p>

<p>yale
smart and preppy, yale
has weird buildings, but worse
a long supplement.</p>

<p>penn
penn is too close by.
people swear there are indie
kids, but i see frats.</p>

<p>chicago
weird kids, hard work, the
core, quite cold winters—and a
bad campus bookstore.</p>

<p>nyu
we are so cooler
than you. shop at ‘urban’ please.
we’ll like you much more. </p>

<p>reed
maybe if i go
here, i’ll meet colin meloy
and sleater-kinney</p>

<p>brown
NOT a real city.
liberal hippies, and a
free curriculum.</p>

<p>vassar
there is nothing good
in Poughkeepsie. but drugs
and a pretty gym.</p>

<p>smith
sylvia plath went
crazy here. Therefore a great
place to spend four years.</p>

<p>columbia
bastards deferred me.
but i never even saw the main
library: oh well. </p>

<p>oberlin
like wes but cooler,
and yeah, in ohio and with
tons of pretension.</p>

<p>barnard
another ugly
library. small dorms, but just
because it’s new york. </p>

<p>boston
my friend goes here, she
told me to apply to the
com school. and i laughed.</p>

<p>Chicago bookstore correction:</p>

<p>Overlooked bookstore?
Seminary co-op is
perhaps country's best.</p>

<p>Love it! Keep it coming!!!</p>

<p>Free waterbottles
Labeled with the school's crest
Who thought of that one?</p>

<p>How cheerful you look
stuck at a folding table
distributing pens!</p>

<p>My brochure is best!
See all the happy faces!
We have a new gym!</p>

<p>Actually it is against Fair rules to give out anything other than information--no water bottles, pens, keychains or even candy.</p>

<p>O blame Canada?
U Toronto, McGill in
A room by themselves</p>

<p>I smile, kids walk by
Is this a college fair or
a junior high dance?</p>

<p>I love it flatlander! It's funny, I thought that the last time I went to a college fair with my kids.</p>

<p>Did you notice how many kids go around the Army's booth for the stuff they give away?</p>
