College Football's Avalanche of Lawsuits

Interesting discussion of concussion-related (CTE) lawsuits and their cost to the NCAA and other leagues.

Are football programs going to become too expensive for many colleges to maintain?

The pressure is coming down on football as a sport from all sides. It’s such a part of the American psyche that it’s impossible to imagine the country without it. Unless they figure out a way to prevent these brain injuries (with all this technology, it could happen), however, football could be on a long, ugly slide into history.

The problem is these big time football programs are big businesses and many players are banking on NFL paychecks. My son played his entire life, up until college, and it was never an issue. They teach better techniques, the equipment is better and the first sign of concussion the kid is out and they are very strict about returning. But that would small town high school football. These bigger programs aren’t worried about the kid (and the NFL isn’t worried about the man). They put these guys back in games when they shouldn’t. And in many cases the kid doesn’t want to come out either because they don’t want to ruin their shot at a scholarship/contract. I think it’s very possible to keep football safe, but people do stupid things for money.
