College Interview in Starbucks

I scheduled a college interview this week, but I’m wondering about the details since it will be in a starbucks… do I go there and just stand around waiting for how? How will I even recognize her? There are so many people in starbucks! And what if we can’t find a seat? And what about coffee? Do I offer to buy hers? Do I let her buy mine? So many things to worry about! Help!

My D has had 2 interviews at Starbucks, it seem to be the place. I guess the interviewers pick coffee shops, as the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. You could go in with a book, and read, and I am sure she will approach you. You don't need to offer to buy hers, each person can get their own, or she may offer to buy you yours. Don't worry about anything. Go prepared with questions for her, like was she pleased with her decision to go to that school, what was her best experience there. Also be able to answer questions she may ask you about why you want to go there, where else did yo apply, about your e/c's, school life. Relax, most interviewers are very kind.

Thanks! I've had two interviews already but they were easier in terms of finding the person (one was at his office the other at the school's club). New York City starbucks tend to be very crowded so I'm just worried I won't be able to recognize her.

I am planning to do interviews for my alma mater next year and will schedule them in a coffee shop. chocoholic's advice is all good and corresponds with what I expect (and what I heard from my son about his interviews this year). The interviewer will either sit where you are if you're there first, or will be sitting there when you arrive looking pleasant and expectant. :) You might drop her an email beforehand and ask how you'll recognize her: I figure I'll take a school logo coffee cup or card to put on the table I sit at, but will also tell the students what I look like and how to spot me. The purpose of the interview is for a person who knows about the school to answer your questions, and to get to know you and become an advocate for you as an applicant, if you seem to be a good fit. Don't worry: bring your enthusiasms and your passions and have a nice conversation!

So if I get there first and sit down...should I already have coffee or wait to get it with her?

I don't think there's a requirement, but if it were me, I'd get my coffee when I arrived and sat down, rather than waiting for her. Especially if it will help calm you to have something to sip while you wait. ;)

My daughter met 2 interviewers at Starbucks. She told them what she looked like.

They emailed her that day and told her what they were wearing.

She arrived early, bought coffee and waited.

Good luck

Thanks! I hope I can identify my interviewer come thursday.... :p

zante no worries they'll find you.. Funny interview story I was waiting for my interviewer at a starbucks and she was running 10 min. late. Of course I got there 10 minutes early. So 10 min after the the original time she was supposed to be there i became a little bit paranoid that she was waiting for me to identify her. Actually i was paranoid to the point where i was looking at anyone who was the same gender and age as she sounded on the phone. Lol yea i elicited some strange looks but hey when she got there she found me. So don't worry if they're a little bit late bc they will find you. Good luck!

I say be sure and get there at least minutes before the interviewer, and grab a table, our starbucks can get very crowded and I would think it would be a bit awkward if you both had to stand around waiting for a table....so whomever gets there first should get the table, and being a good little interviewEE, the student should be there first anyway....

Of course! I plan on getting there a few minutes early. I just hope that we both go to the right startbucks (as there is about one per block in manhattan) and identify each other. After that, things will be smooth sailing I hope :p

Zante- is this for Georgetown? I had mine in a Starbucks, too. I sat there for like 15 minutes until she came up to me... but it's okay, we laughed it off.

Some things about my interview:
-I bought my own coffee before I met her (decaf, of course, so my nerves wouldn't be on edge)
-definitely have questions prepared to ask him/her
-because it's a starbucks, dress casually (I just made a date for my Penn interview (at a coffee house), and the lady outright said "I'm probably going to show up in sweatpants or something, so pleeease don't dress up; come in what you normally wear.")
-Um... I can't think of anything else. Good luck! :)

zante, i had my princeton interview at starbucks...here are some tips

ask ur interviewer to wear some kind of school garb that has a logo that will be distinguishable...my princeton interviewer was decked out in her cool princeton t, a princeton cap, and even wore a cute little tiger button, lol

secondly, in order to avoid any confusion, i suggest u get a little early and buy ur own drink...its also good to go early so u can pick out a table...u dont wanna be there and not have anywhere to sit

last but not least, i always like to start the convo off with a little small talk or a funny little anecdote :p really breaks the ice and gives the interviewer a good impression bout u right off the bat

I enjoyed my Starbucks interview. I was only about 5 minutes early, and the interviewer was at an obvious table. She was over taking notes or something, and she waved me over.

She offered me a drink, but I didn't feel comfortable getting an expensive coffee on her pocketbook, so I just got tap water with lemon. It was good and free, and nice because I had to talk a lot.

Calidan I think I had the same lady for a Penn interview! I live in San Francisco and the coffee house I meet her at is at some place like knob hill (i cant remember the exact location).

Yes Calidan this is for Georgetown.
The dress code isn't a problem because we'll both be coming off from work, so business casual is the deal.

Don't sorry about identifying your interviewer, because s/he will be trying to identify you. You will very likely be the only two people in the place scanning the faces of strangers looking for someone who appears to be also looking for someone. It won't be tough.

lol that's a funny imagery, but very true I'm sure. Thanks for the help!

My D had her interview is Starbucks and was very nervous about finding the interviewer, so we went in together about 20 mins early, got bottled water and a table, and it was very obvious who we were looking for ....she sat by the window with a stack of promotional material, etc. Then we had to try not to stare as she interviewed her 1st candidate!!
I met her and asked a few questions, then left and sat in the car (positioned discreetly where I could see the whole thing through the window! what fun!) - you'll be fine...and so well prepared after all this great advice.

Thanks for all the help! I went to check out the starbucks today (it's right by where I work) and it looks small enough that I won't have to search TOO hard.
