To refresh an old topic....can some of the ladies here describe their college life in Lexington? My D has reservations about the possible isolation of the town. Are there truly enough activities to enjoy life outside of class? Are weekend trips to larger cities (Richmond?) common? I know sports and clubs will be important to her, but sometimes you just need to shop and have lunch---girl stuff! I don't mean to be trivial, but I think livability is a huge factor in making a college choice.

Lots of good eateries in Lexington within walking distance to campus. Clothes shopping , not so much. Although there is a Lily Pulitzer store in town...:)

And Pappagallo, Alvin-Dennis (local prep shop), as well as several other clothing boutiques.

We have eaten at a few local restaurants and had good experiences, always seeing local students (the Palms, Southern Inn, Livery, can't remember all the names).

Def limited in number, but there are shopping/dining options within walking distance. Roanoke is an hour by car. C'ville just a bit farther.

Warning: The Palms is not the same as The Palms in NYC!!!

Even though my D is an intercollegiate athlete, she is definitely feminine and likes to do "girl stuff" with her female friends. They've barely been there 2 weeks (classes started today) and she has been extremely busy with social activities with her team and hall mates.

there are some extremely good sandwich shops, most notably Joyful Spirit. the Palms is not that good, but good enough. your daughter will mostly eat in the D-Hall.

i find shopping in Lex very disappointing. there are NO chain stores, and everything seems extremely overpriced to me. (but maybe that's just my midwestern sensibilities talking). you go to roanoke maybe once or twice a term, richmond / c-ville less than that, but you'll spend a lot of time there and usually stock up on new clothes...

it's def very different from living in a city, but it's still a lot of fun, and it makes you appreciate going home.

Wal-Mart will become your most exciting shopping trip. Blaghhh.
lol

Everything in Lex is indeed overpriced and Walmart is the best. As for social life, I'm a freshman, so I have been doing some exploring too. Ive found that generally they are a lot of things happening on campus itself that students dont appreciate (atleast quite a few freshmen dont) and they are tons and tons of parties everywhere. They kid you not when they say its a party school. If not parties, they are quite a few events going on and always something to do.

Lexington defintely takes time to get used to. But, its a beautiful town.

Nothing to do tomorrow? Go support the Men's and Women's Cross-Country Invitational that will be held in Lexington!
