Hey! I’m super excited to be starting my college search, and was wondering is anyone had any college suggestions for my list! I am presumed to get around a 1350 on the SAT, and my GPA is pretty high (my school doesn’t include our GPAs, but my average is around a 94%). I have a good amount of extracurriculars, but of course I don’t want to limit myself to only prestigious schools. I’m really looking into a school where I can join an equestrian club/team that is taken pretty seriously and has a barn in close proximity to the college. However, I most likely wouldn’t be able to make a super hard team at a division 1 school (auburn, cofc etc.). I’m open to schools either in the north or south, but mostly the north. I’d also like for the school to be somewhere more urban than rural. For example, I love University of Vermont, but I’m not sure what the riding team’s status is, since the school is Division 1. If anyone has any ideas, I’d absolutely love to hear them!
Although some of these suggestions reside in areas more rural than you might prefer, Mount Holyoke, Skidmore, UNH, St. Lawrence, Alfred, Hollins and Sweet Briar offer well-established riding programs. Note that for colleges that compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA), the teams include all levels of riders, from beginner walk-trot to open (advanced).
That’s interesting! I like Mount Holyoke a lot, and I’ll look into the rest!
Not urban, but maybe Hobart & William Smith. D has a friend on their team.
I went through the process with D19 who is an equestrian. There are several hundred schools with riding programs so you’ll need to be a little more specific. In any event, it’s not hard to find the school barn via a google search and then map it to see how far it is from campus. One of the nicest barns/programs we found was at Randolph-Macon in Virginia. The barn was about 1-2 miles from campus so it was an easy commute, and the school is only about 15-20 minutes from Richmond. Equestrian Center :: Randolph-Macon College
I believe Goucher has an excellent equestrian team.
