Since you’re from VA and say he’d be interested in smaller schools and LACs, and that he thrives when he’s challenged academically, I’m a little surprised that W & M isn’t on his list. I notice that UVA is, as a high reach. I’ve been following both schools for some time and would consider them matches for your son’s stats, especially as an in-state student. The issue of the disciplinary infractions is a separate one, and for a true safety you’re looking for schools that admit more by the numbers (his are excellent).

Does his private school subscribe to Naviance, which would tell him how students from his school have fared in the past at specific schools?

You should take a look at SUNY Geneseo in NY. Considered a public honors college in NY…he has the stats to get in and he is OOS which is a plus.

How about VMI or the Citadel? They obviously are regimented and provide good educations.

VMI and the Citadel are probably a bit intense, although one of the other SMCs might be an option if he’s considering the military/police as a career option. VT is instate and you don’t have to commit to ROTC to be in the Corps; I think the corps at Texas A&M is the same. Both schools should be able to provide him with a solid preparation for PT field if he wants to go that route, so it might be worth floating the idea to see if he’s interested in the challenge. The catch is that HE has to be the one to want it - those who join such programs because their parents require it tend not to last long!
