What would be some target and safety schools for daughter, SAT 1570, GPA 97, interested in mid-size, urban/suburban areas, for environmental studies/theater?

Finances? Home state? Geographic preferences? Activities?

Agree we need the above info, plus clarity on the theater major…is your D looking at audition required programs?

Thanks, not looking for a BFA program, but interested in maybe minoring in theater as she is coming from a performing arts high school. The Northeast is probably her most preferred area as we are from NY, but not ruling out any area per se.

Here’s some.

Rochester…target/reach. Case Western a match/safety. Binghamton a safety. Going South but to schools with a lot of Northeasterners would be Charleston and Eckerd. Charleston is most rural. U of Miami is another. Elon works but it’s rural but within a stones throw of two major cities. And Dartmouth comes to mind except the rural part. All the Southern schools are safeties with Miami maybe a low target but I’m sure in if no audition needed etc

Thank you - Do you consider Tulane a southern school?

Tulane has a substantial population from NY/NJ, and definitely not a southern feel. Good chance for admission if you ED there, more of a target if RD since yield is a factor. A place you would want to visit first, I think.

University of Vermont checks all the boxes.

Wesleyan is great for all of the above. Although classified as an LAC, it is the largest of that group. At 3000+ students it’s approaching “mid size”. It’s in a populated area with dozens of great restaurants down the street and some live music as well. Within a short drive, there is professional live theater at a couple of different venues nearby both to the north and the south. Oddfellows is an amateur theater group in town that is always interested in willing participants. Their commitment to environmental studies shows in their College of the Environment and the small student run farm on campus.

If you want to give an Ivy a shot, Yale is good for both environmental studies and theater. It’s just that it’s impossible to get admitted no matter how well qualified.

If size were not a consideration, I’d be recommending Whitman College in the state of Washington. But she wants a mid size college, so I won’t mention it.

I agree with visiting Tulane. And yes it’s a ton of rich, Neastern kids.

Everyone loves it. It was high on my daughter’s list. Then we visited. She hated it. It’s old. The dorms are not nice. It’s not in the city although there is a street car to get there.

Most love it. It’s not easy to get into and I think ED definitely plays a part. And if you ED (anywhere), check out the net or ice calculator or be prepared to pay full freight.

My daughters favorite college is Charleston which is where she’s going (free tuition OOS). Yes it doesn’t have the pedigree but they have special programs for top kids. It’s historic, gorgeous, and in the city.

I would say Emory and WUSTL would be Tulane equivalent but much more aesthetically pleasing. Both are higher ranked so in theory harder to get into but there are 4.0 and 36 getting shot down at Tulane. It’s all about demonstrated interest and the why Tulane essay.

Brandeis might be a good sub. Wake Forest although it’s a ways from town. Most love it. My daughter didn’t…the reason silly but to each their own. There are parking lots in front of each building vs garages ringing campus so she thought it was like an office park. I know must love it. Wake easier thanTulane to get in - my opinion - although ranked higher. Richmond and Lehigh might be worth looking at…I’ll say match but likely in. Richmond maybe a tad small. Wesleyan/Vassar are other larger LACs in addition to Richmond that would work and are low reach. Actually Wes more a target.

Good luck

Keeping in mind you need safeties…
Seconding UVermont (honors).
What about Muhlenberg for strong theater, environmental science, sustainability studies. 40 miles from Philadelphia and smaller, but a good safety with academic strengths in her majors of interest.

SMU would be a safety/match with that profile if you show some interest. Quite a few Northeast kids. Will get significant merit.

Environmental Studies and excellent theater program.
