My college sophmore son called me today after a meeting with his college advisor to discuss and finalize his selection for a major. Based on his interest in Business his advisor told him that the job market for business graduates is so broad that it would be best for him to graduate with a major in Business Administartion and get a double minor in Sales and Marketing or Finance and Marketing. Looking for comments and feedback from experienced business people to confirm this is a good suggestion and or decision that he has made from the advice received ??

Aren’t marketing and finance subareas of business, so that a business major will take upper division courses in both subareas (but may take additional elective upper division courses in subareas of interest)?

I teach at a college of business and would never advise anyone to get just a general business BBA with a minor in some business speciality. I would recommend economics/math or another liberal arts major before that. He needs to do a specialized major within the business program. For job prospects (this comes from our Career Center data), I would rank them roughly in this order( from best to worst)…

Accounting
MIS
(the above 2 generally have the best job prospects and really good starting salaries)
Finance
Marketing/Sales
Managment
General BBA with a minor
