I know that the major I choose does not matter when applying for med-school. I am supposed to major in something I really like or would enjoy studying. However, I love everything that has to do with science and medicine. I would like to know which major would most likely allow me(or give me better chances) to participate in research, internships, and maybe land a job in a clinic or hospital while still being an undergraduate student working towards my degree?I know these things do make a difference in my Medical School Application.

These are my Major Interests:

Pre-Medical Sciences (University of South Florida offers it as a major, but I am not sure if this is the same as a pre-med major?....is pre-med really a major?....is a pre-med major 4 years long....I heard that is only a 2 year degree...any true to this?

Microbiology

Biomedical Sciences

*Any good or bad things about these majors? Any recommendations on majors I should consider?

BTW: If in the future I do get into Medical School, I would like to become a Pediatrician,(100% sure) kids are the best.

“would like to know which major would most likely allow me(or give me better chances) to participate in research, internships, and maybe land a job in a clinic or hospital while still being an undergraduate student working towards my degree?”

Again, your major has nothing to do with Research, Internships. Just contact person in charge of research lab at school. In regard to job, good luck! No jobs available in our area, no dirty jobs, no clean jobs, no full time, no part time, nothing, period. I do not see it will change in a near future. If you have connections, it is the only way to get ANY job in a hospital or otherwise. Try to get a job on campus during school year. You might have a better chance there.

Of those three, I don’t know what “Biomedical Sciences” is and PreMed is definitely out. Microbiology is fine.

Depending on what university you’re with, jobs might be very plentiful. Ask around – there could be some really great opportunities. You have to be willing to get rejected a few times, of course, as is always the case when you’re “cold calling” certain places.

^^^ Trying to find a lab to research in, using informal methods is brutal…I was told no at 20 places (either all the spots were already taken up, or they don’t like taking freshman)…but then I found out that my school offers a program where they pair you with a faculty member who is doing research, maybe your school has one of these types of programs, if they do, it makes getting involved in research A LOT EASIER…

The first person that D contacted for Interning at Med. Research lab at her school resulted in her internship. The same with her friend. Niehter of them knew person before, they just expressed interest. They are not paid at the lab, but both have jobs on campus. I guess it is different from place to place. However, it is not possible to find any summer job in our city.

Do not, under any circumstances, major in anything with the words “pre-med” in it. It is not a discipline of study. At all. It has no theory or underlying philosophy. It has no meaning to anyone.

What you study does not determine if you can get a job/internship/do research. If you want to do research, you will most likely want to do it in the department you are studying it because that is the topic you are most interested in. Being involved in a field as a student also can open up opportunities in the department to do research with the faculty.

How about taking some classes and find out what you like the most before you decide on a major?

Premed is not a major or a degree program, except at a very small minority of schools. Even then, like VasssarGrad said, avoid any such major like the plague.

MiamiDAP… In regard to job, good luck! No jobs available in our area, no dirty jobs, no clean jobs, no full time, no part time, nothing, period. I do not see it will change in a near future.
-Are you referring to Tampa???
