Alright I'm about to start at the University of Oklahoma this August and one thing I am really conerned about are lectures, and lecture note taking. I cant decide whether to hand write notes or type them up in a laptop. Im taking Intermediate Spanish 1, Precalculus/Trig, General Chem 1, Gateway, and Orientation to Health Professions. Which of theses classes should I focus in typing notes or handwriting notes

As a general rule, hand write your notes for any math/science class because that way you can easily organize your notes while copying down a model problem or drawing a diagram. The only time you should really consider typing notes is in maybe a history or English class because you’re just taking down straight notes and you can copy faster. So I’d say for everything but maybe Spanish, go ahead and hand write them because it’ll make your life easier.

I agree with MKevin345’s advice. I prefer a paper-and-pen for math, science, and economics classes as it’s simply quicker drawing diagrams and writing mathematical-related stuff by hand. For history and English, a laptop is usually better for the sake of expediency.

I agree with the other two posters. If you write fast enough and/or can abbreviate things (depending on the class and professor), keep in mind that you can take notes by hand and later retype them on your computer. That’s what I like to do for my classes, save for my equation-heavy classes where I don’t retype them.

Handwriting. Actually note-taking is not a simple thing. Do you know about cornell note-taking? This has a structure: place for main points a professor emphasizes, contents according to the flow of a lecture, relations between contents, questions, memo and etc. Note-taking is a important skill and we can find the significant and positive relationship between a student’s note-taking skill and his/her performance (grade). Thus, handwriting, please.

some teachers will not allow your laptop in class and you will have to hand write notes for those classes

I prefer hand writing notes because then I can make all of the symbols and arrows and little side notes that I need to make.

I have used my computer for political sciences classes.

For you I would suggest only using your computer in Orientation to health professions…not sure what type of class gateway is.

I would say handwrite notes for Spanish because of accents and other non-English things that take time to input on an American keyboard.
