I’m in state and got into Honors today! Has anyone else heard back?
Congrats for Honors @anxietyforhonors My son is a sophomore at The Honors College
@anxietyforhonors Congratulations!
@carolinamom2boys As you say, this may well be a case of “Tufts” syndrome. However, Tufts is ranked #22 in the nation, while CofC is ranked in the 300s. They really shouldn’t be playing that game. As for my D, we visited CofC from MD and she wrote great essays and even applied to the Honors college.
D just got her “golden envelope” in the mail today. We are OOS and she did not apply to Honors…although i thought she should.
@mamatojjandkk It’s no “game” Do you even know what Tufts Syndrome is? A school may decide to admit someone who they feel is committed to attending over someone who is only using it as a back up. That’s wonderful that your daughter visited from MD and applied to the Honors College. Hundreds of students from all over the country and the world have also visited CofC and applied to the Honors College. I’m not sure why that has any bearing on her admission over anyone else.
What rankings are you looking at @mamatojjandkk College of Charleston is a regional college and not ranked in the same category as national universities .
Congrats @parent43 . If your daughter decides to attend she is able to apply as a freshman to the Honors College should she decide to.
@carolinamom2boys No need to get so nasty. Yes, I know what Tufts syndrome is. Niche’s web site lists CofC in the 300s range. I love CofC, but my opinion stands. They are not even close in rank to Tufts or other schools doing similar things to try and up their yield no matter where you want to check rankings.
As for my D, you asked the question about showing interest. Visiting from OOS and applying to their Honors College are two ways of showing sincere interest in being at student at a college. I never said that totally set her apart from every other student applying.
@mamatojjandkk I did not get nasty. Your posts don’t suggest that you love CofC , actually just the opposite . A school certainly can choose to admit a student who will most likely will attend over someone choosing it as a safety.
@carolinamom2boys Asking if I even know what something is, in that phrasing, is nasty. Hmm, I said I love Cof C, I don’t care if you choose not to believe me. However, at their rank, they should not treat higher stat (for them) students so cavalierly by deferring them. So, to you, that means I hate them, whatever @@.
@carolinamom2boys Asking “Do you even know what …means” is nasty. Hmmm, I said I love CofC. You CAN love something and still criticize it. At their rank, they shouldn’t be treating higher stat (for them) students cavalierly by deferring them. That’s my opinion and probably the opinion of some others who this happened to. Not changing it.
@mamatojjandkk I never asked you to change your opinion. You are certainly entitled to it. I stand by my opinion that they can admit who they feel is a good fit for their school. Each year admissions become more competitive . You have no idea what the stats of the candidates that weren’t deferred this year are. I get it. You assumed that your daughter would be admitted and when she wasn’t you were disappointed , frustrated and it appears angry. There are no guarantees in the college application process. Your daughter may have been deferred to see what other applications are submitted by students who may have equally as good or better stats . No one wants to believe that there may be a better candidate for a school than their child. Especially when they assumed it would be an easy admit.
I think that CofC does a good job, particularly for a state school, of reviewing it’s candidates holistically. So while you may fit the profile they are not just looking at the numbers.
@carolinamom2boys There were a couple of other posters with stats on the high end for CofC that were surprised to be deferred. I hope CofC gets the yield it wants, but it may have turned off some potential students by deferring them, even if they eventually get accepted. As for my D, it’s mostly her decision, so we’ll have to see
@labegg Thank you for your thoughts. We weren’t just considering the numbers, but were looking at ECs, LORs, essays, etc., too.
@mamatojjandkk In the end , students need to go where they feel is best for them . I’m sure that CofC’s yield will be fine with well qualified students .
There is no way to know how an applicant’s LOR, academics ,ECs or essays compare to other applicants for that application year. Each year candidates attributes change. Looking at previous admission cycles may be somewhat helpful, but they are not always an indication of admissions in the current year .
Has anyone heard from the Honors College? I got my mail packet very late from the rest of the Early Action student, and obviously really want to know! Does the College send out an email for the Honors as well as hard mail? Also, does anyone know if we will be notified via the MyCharleston account? BTW I’m in Virginia
I’m not sure regular Honors notifications have been sent out yet. Those are usually sent out after the scholarship weekend which is this weekend @Meredith.H
They emailed me about joining the Facebook group a day or so after I got my letter. I’m in state, though. My DegreeWorks page changed to show Honors College graduation requirements.
