College Of Charleston Merit Scholarship/Academic Scholarship

Hopefully someone can help! My DD recently received an email that she was accepted with a Merit scholarship. However we are OOS, does an academic scholarship follow or is this the total aid she would receive? We did dot yet receive her packet in the mail.

@madplaid a merit scholarship is technically the academic scholarship, but it may not be the FINAL aid package if any need based is also included for her (depending on her FAFSA). Schools send out a final financial summary usually in April or sometimes earlier that will include everything together on one form. Normally the merit scholarship is given out around the time of admission or shortly after, and is only based on her actual application and stats. The final financial form will include everything she is being offered such as merit scholarship that you already know about, federal loans, work/study, and any need based scholarships/grants, and finally any departmental scholarships if CofC does those.

Some schools even have an ongoing financial aid portal that will already reflect what the FAFSA told her she is getting, along with the merit scholarship (Auburn does). But I am unsure if CofC has a portal for $. Hope this helps!

My daughter received her merit scholarship with her acceptance notification as well. She applied to the Honors college, but the acceptance email didn’t mention anything about Honors. Does anyone know if they send Honors acceptances separately? Her decision to apply was last minute—so she didn’t make the Honors Dec 1 priority deadline. The person I spoke with at the Honors college said her chances of being accepted because she didn’t make the priority deadline were very small.

My S19 just received acceptance and $14,500 merit. Does honors college also come in this same letter? Or does it follow? We are OOS.

@G&HMom @VA–>NC Did you ever find out about CofC Honors College? My D got accepted about a week ago. Very difficult decision now (CofC, Pitt, U-AZ) … curious what happened with you and if you’re going for it and why.

Sorry - having trouble getting your names to hyperlink after the @ symbol… that’s why I tried, and failed, twice.

@“G&HMom” @“VA–>NC” okay, now I figured out how to tag you! My question is above. Sorry for the technical glitches.

Do you mind letting me know your gpa and test scores with the scholarship?

My son had a 33 ACT and roughly 3.6 GPA. He was offered $19,500 a year.

Thank you for sharing that. So this is automatic, or was this with application for honors college? My daughter is a junior and we are OOS looking for merit she has a 4.0 unweighted GPA but has yet to take her SAT/ACT. Seems like merit ranges quite a bit. Is there a specific cut off they look at on scores with a certain dollar amount? Or does it just seem random?

I don’t know the answer to most of your questions, but I do know that Honors College was separate from the award. He could have enrolled and chosen not to attend Honors College, and still have gotten the scholarship. And no separate application was made for the scholarship, it just came with admission. Having said that, our excitement about CoC faded as we visited and learned more about how wildly Leftist it is. History professors are avowed communists, Jewish Studies professors sign anti-Israel petitions, on and on and on. If it were balanced on the other side fine – great, even. But it’s not. One faculty member farther to the Left than the next. If that’s okay with you, then it’s probably a great choice. For us it was not.

Hmmm interesting . Good to know. Where did your son end up?
