Thanks for posting the USNews squib. halcyontimes. It reinforces the sense I’ve always had that students are the top priority at W&M. If only the College’s endowment could grow … I can’t find the exact figures now, but W&M has one of the the smallest endowments, if not the smallest, of the top 50 USNews-ranked schools.

Endowment is important, but it isn’t the most important thing. W&M has an endowment of 644.2 million according to the President’s report. With 8,200 students, 6,000 which are undergraduates, this is a pretty big endowment. Smaller schools will not be able to compete with private universities and large flagship universities like UVA, but that’s not a bad thing.

W&M isn’t a big research school. Endowments often come from support for research grants and from alumni. There aren’t as many alumni from W&M as there are for Ohio State. I’m not surprised the endowment isn’t that big.

I think it’s more important what value students get from the school for the price. According to these reports, W&M is a great choice.

The most interesting thing is W&M is able to give so much to it’s students AND have a smaller endowment. More resources spent per student means that money is going towards the student’s education.

The important number to note is W&M spends $28,000 per student - that is more than in-state tuition (if one does not include non-academic fees) - which is the reason why a large endowment helps - it aids in covering the financial needs of applying students. Out-of-state students can only shoulder so much of the burden!

I just hope W&M would be somewhere on the list for the out of state students! I won’t know that for a few more years. W&M: I would hope that the % increase for out of state students is not higher than the in state students this year – I agree with PhDbeenthere in that out of state students can only shoulder so much of the burden. While I get that I haven’t paid taxes to VA, I do pay close to twice what is spent on my son. I’m not bitter, even if I’m coming coming across that way. I just want an equitable sharing of increases.
