College Prep Programs...worth it?

Many Universities have summer college prep programs where you take 1 or 2 classes with the school's undergrads. They are generally quite expensive (over $8000 and limited FA) so i was wondering if it's worth the money. Anyone with first hand experience? Also, is it a factor during college admissions? Thanks

When applying to the elite colleges, it is very important to have summer activities. It is all part of looking as if you are challenging yourself. When it comes to the expensive summer courses at colleges, that requires some further comments.

Colleges like to make money. They have this dead period during summer when the facilities are underutilized. It works out well for them to hire a few professors to teach high school students for a large amount of money.

Going to one of these programs would help you during college admissions. However, there are any number of other options that would help you very bit as much for less money. You might find a cheaper program or find an internship. Some volunteer organizations look for people willing to do work for free. If nothing else, taking a course at the local community college is just as good. The point is to show initiative, a love of knowledge, and a need to challenge yourself. If you ask the question "Is it worth the money", then it isn't. Think what else you can do with $8000.

One thing is certain. Taking an expensive program at a particular elite college will NOT give you any particular advantage at that particular college if you apply.
