If school A is an Ivy, then I think I’d also be very worried about not having gone on an official visit there yet and not having one scheduled for one of the next 3 weekends either. My sense is that you are not a strong recruit for that school. It is possible that the coach asked you about how your application was coming along because he wants you to apply so that he can see if maybe the admissions office will give you to him as a freebie–that is, he wants to find out if you’d be a fully qualified, acceptance-worthy applicant without the sports so he wouldn’t have to use his allotment of tips on you. Because in that scenario, he’d take you.

How would you feel about being low on the totem pole on his team?

HSAthlete - You are in the exact same position that I was a couple of days ago. I had Choice A and B (both were Ivies), and even though I loved both, I was leaning towards Choice A. I went on officials to both and was still leaning slightly towards College A.

To cut a long story short, I eventually realized that Coach A was playing a game with me and I was obviously not the “top choice” recruit. I decided to commit to College B as I still love the school and I did not want to lose out on an incredible opportunity just because Coach A was not able to give me an answer yet.

I now realize that I liked College A for the wrong reasons, and I am very happy with my decision.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats, you chose wisely. You asserted yourself, and were able to get the information you needed to make a tough decision. You also removed emotion from the decision by sticking with the information available at that point in time.

You can now insert emotion back into the equation when you play “College A” in the future!

Chiming in with my 2cents. If you didn’t get an OV offer, you are not high enough on the coach’s recruiting list to risk jeopardizing your chances at Schools B and C. Agree it is worth a very straightforward conversation - and very soon - with Coach A to find out exactly where you stand. Good luck and keep us posted…
