If anybody could help me I'd gladly appreciate it.

I'm looking for colleges that offer good foreign language programs, particularly Slavic languages and literatures (Although I would study anything that isn't your typical French/Spanish/Italian). The problem is that for me to leave Florida and go out of state I would have to get a considerable amount of money from scholarships.

And if at all possible, being in a big city would be ideal.

Sat: 1410/2170
GPA out of 4.0 is 3.42

My extracurriculars include being an NSLI-Y Alumni, officer roles in 4 language/culture-related clubs, Model UN officer, DECA officer, co-president of volunteer organization, volunteer at Nature Reserve, and some other clubs/volunteering.

I also have 8 language credits of Spanish and French, plus 5 on AP Spanish exam.

My GPA is really what drags me down, but are there any colleges that fit my criteria and focusing more on the extracurriculars than it?

Thank you all in advance

You’re right about the GPA being a show-stopper at lots of the best exotic language schools, which are often of the ivy caliber. You might look at state department and DoD scholarships for students studying languages in which they’re interested. The scholarships might help to pay for language schools outside of Florida, but I still don’t see you getting into Middlebury, Penn, Yale, etc. Dickinson however has good language education but it’s expensive. Schools to which you might gain admission that you might afford could be Madison and Bloomington (dozens of languages), UPitt has yoruba and haitian creole, gaelic, turkish, and more common less commonly taught languages,

So I did a little more work on the Institute of Education Sciences College navigator website and went looking for schools that had these less common languages:

I found a list of schools with one or more of these less common languages:

<a href=“College Navigator - Search Results”>College Navigator - Search Results;

Thank you for taking your time in your answer, but it seems like all the schools are either small and expensive private schools or large public ones that wouldn’t offer me a considerable amount of money.

Has anybody in a similar situation found a college that is ideal for them? If I want to go out of state to study languages/international relations, I need to get a considerable amount of money.

Also, what did you mean by state department scholarships? As a state department international exchange alumni, would that benefit me and where can I find them?

Might I also suggest that you consider joining a branch of the military and attending the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA? I learned Russian there and you graduate with an Associates degree and then get 2 1/2 years or so of real experience with the language during which you may be able to finish the Bachelor’s degree for free as well. Not for everybody I know, but just wanted to make sure you were aware of it as a possibility. DLI is considered one of the best language schools in the world: http://www.dliflc.edu/</a></p>

Alabama has good merit aid and offers Greek and Latin (as well as classical studies)

Wow, I didn’t know at all about the Defense Language Institute. Thanks a lot for that information. I’m going to talk to a recruiter next week about that, although I’m not sure how well that would go over with my parents, and if I would even want to at all.

I’m really considering all my options - does anybody have any other experience that they’d like to share?

You might also want to look into the Language Flagship (http://www.thelanguageflagship.org/?q=content/undergraduate</a>), which have some of the best college programs for language study (including Russian programs at Portland State, Bryn Mawr, UCLA, and UW-Madison) and also include a mandatory capstone year abroad. In one of your posts you say that you are an NSLIY alumnus, so this may be a good fit for you. Hope this helps!

I’d suggest American U, but I doubt you’d get enough financial aid for it to be affordable. Is your 3.42 a weighted or unweighted GPA? My son had similar stats, but he took a heavy IB/AP courseload, and so his weighted GPA was at least 4.0.

3.42 unweighted. I have taken a lot of AP courses. I looked at American but the problem is that even if I was to get merit aid the price of the university is just too much.
