College Sent PostCard Requesting Application

Yes, that, and all schools want to up their applicant pool because as the denominator goes up, the acceptance rate goes down (I think someone pointed this out upthread.)

I guess my kid checked that PSAT box and it’s probably a good thing because he barely looks at the stuff that does come in. I on the other hand… :)

Not only is D not getting much unsolicited mail, but the colleges she has contacted haven’t exactly rolled out the red carpet either. She had one of her two free “commended” notices for the PSAT sent to NYU. I think she has received one post card, and series of large glossy books for NYU-Abu Dhabi. We try to make light of it by pointing out the many advantages to wearing a burqa, but the insecurity is mounting. Perhaps she should have done the Chaz thing and registered as a boy.

My oldest got a lot of mail. I advised my other two not to check the box for receiving mail (or to check the box for not receiving, I forget which) and they got nothing at all. It was a relief. They requested info from the schools they were interested in, visited, and applied to 4 and 2 schools respectively. Phew!

The best one was a call from Harvard Outreach Program.

I laughed and did not return the call.

why did you laugh? If your kid has the grades/scores…?

momsquad, just like getting a ton of mail doesn’t mean that your student is being recruited, NOT getting a ton of mail doesn’t mean that your student is being spurned. Regardless of what box got checked on the PSAT/SAT form.

Let me give you a theory (which could easily be wrong  ) about why NYU isn’t innundating your D with mail at this stage of the game. Your D had the National Merit folks send NYU a note saying that NYU is one of your D’s top two picks. Since NYU offers no National Merit money, sending that notice is a way for your D to tell NYU that she really, really likes them. So now NYU knows that she really likes them, can note that as demonstrated interest…and then why bother sending her anything else meant to entice your D to apply? NYU knows she’s going to apply. The courtship has proceeded as far as is possible at this stage.

If a student with good scores isn’t getting mail, the explanation almost has to be that he checked the box saying not to send mail. The mail comes from all kinds of schools, including many way, way down the ladder in terms of selectivity.

Thanks Slithey, that seems like a perfectly plausible explanation. D said she checked the box, but perhaps not.

My S got 2 phone calls from a local, big-name college that he wasn’t even pursuing besides getting all the mail and emails. I was really surprised. I expected all the mail, but I didn’t expect the phone calls.

My kid got a very specific letter referring to ACT scores before we even received the scores.
