Thanks everyone - any and all ideas welcome and appreciated!

And to open it up a bit more - I wasn’t clear enough in my OP - he wants the best academic experience he can get into (and afford), so he will definitely head off to a small school in the country if that’s the best opportunity he can find. While his GPA isn’t real high, he’s currently pulling almost straight A’s in almost all honors or AP classes. He wants to build on his potential in his education more than live in the city of his choice for 4 years.

His PREFERENCES are an medium sized school, urban setting, very diverse student body. If he ends up somewhere more homogeneous, it would have to lean more toward down-to-earth, liberal, quirky kids than surrounded by ultra religious students, athletic enthusiasts, or kids who care what brand name their clothes are.

I really appreciate everyone’s opinions!

I hate to keep saying this, but this epitomizes Temple.

tulane is great with merit aid. it’s urban, warm, liberal, and medium sized. you’ll see more kids wearing tulane shirts than any brand name ones. and there’s no better place to pursue social justice than in new orleans, a city that the students are helping rebuild. community service is necessary to graduate now.

tulane even offers a brand new social policy and practice major that focuses on social justice, race, gender, and class issues. it’s the only major of it’s kind in the country.
and i can promise you that the girls at tulane are more attractive than the ones at american. :)

apply early and he might have a good shot.

UMASS Amherst has a program called “Social Thought and Political Economy”. Like above, focus seems to be on social justice, community action and race class programs. (It’s been a while since I looked.)

UMASS is a large school in a very liberal environment. (“25 square miles surrounded by reality”.) Kids can take classes at Amherst (a top tier LAC)

Probably doesn’t meet the urban criteria but its basically a city onto itself.
