College suggestions for budding craftsman.

Hello everyone.

Im in the start of my college application process and i barley have a solid list to apply too. My situation is interesting. I have always been a hands on learner, im extremely self motivated when it comes to crafts and design. Currently my passion lies in fine instrument construction (acoustic guitars, ukuleles, violins, and more) but that always changes. Who knows, maybe it will stick with me forever. But anyway, im looking to apply somewhere where i can get an education in craft, building things, something that is not choked with math and not all fluffed up with art. I was thinking industrial design might be a good match though i am tentative. I also love nature and folk music. My ideal area would be a mountainous area with a strong folk culture.

Does anyone know of a place with interesting programs for craft or design?

Hank

RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) has programs in Furniture Design, Graphic Design, and Industrial Design.

I think he might find RISD too “fluffed up with art” Not to mention it is really competitive to get into…
How about RIT -

or SCAD?

I’m sorry not to be able to contribute. I looked at some places that occurred to me, such as Alfred, VA Tech, and Cranbrook (not a college, I know), but none of them had programs working with wood.

There are luthier schools, of course. And there is a great boat-building school in Bath, ME. (And more elsewhere.) There are places like Haystack that have a lot of high-level craftspeople.

University of the Arts and Philadelphia University are in a city but not far from good hiking and biking areas. Several folklore and folk music organizations are easily accessible and welcoming. Annual folk festival is a leader.
