college suggestions for low GPA?

My youngest has a 2.6 GPA. (average SAT, few extracurriculars)- what colleges should we look into?

What state are you from, and what major is he interested in?

We live in Maryland, so are looking East Coast/MidWest. He is interested in psychology.

I paint a dismal picture, but he is very bright, participated in the Hopkins CTY program for 4 years, early standardized test scores were great. As a HS student he was bored and didn't put in any effort, so grades and tests are low. ECs (besides CTY) include several volunteer activities (teaching assistant at a school for children w/ disabilities, teaching assistant for the scholastic chess club, etc). But I'm trying to see what is possible given the reality of what he has done academically.

Washington College? It's a small LAC in MD. There is also Skidmore College in NY one of the few liberal arts colleges with a business major. In Illinois, there is also Knox College. I've heard of it because Stephen Colbert got his honorary degree there haha.

If by average SAT scores, you mean 1800 - 1900ish, your son's score might be within the score range at these colleges.

Maybe St. Mary's Maryland?

He'd very probably get into Marshall University in WV. I think the psychology there is decent enough. It's a medium/large sized university in a city if that's something he'd like.

Could he get into UMBC?

I think the best thing he could do is to go to community college for a year or two.

your son sounds exactly like me. cty alum.. bored hs student... low gpa... psych...

my college counselor told me to look into clark, connecticut college, and temple. they're pretty good with psych and are supposed to be easy for me to get into (accodring to cc), so maybe they'll be matches for you.

or also community college for a year/two years could also be an option. maybe he needs some time to get his act together academically.

best of luck.

You could look at Temple, but thankfully, admission is getting much tougher than before :)

^ TUOwls2011 is that true? I'm guessing from your name you're a student there? Darn my CC for getting my hopes up.

Yeah, my family has been pushing for that to happen for years. Doesn't mean you, or anyone shouldn't try, but administration is trying to make it 3.0 minimum. And yes, I go there :D

thank you all so much! any other suggestions? please?

What are SAT scores in each section?

Why not consider Frostburg, Salisbury, or Towson? (I know, I know, bleh. I'm from Maryland, too, and really hope my kids can go someplace more "special.")

BUUUTTT, if he's REALLY interested in Psych, obviously he'll need grad school. Staying in-state for UG may make that easier to afford.

I'd look at Beloit in WI or any other CTCL school

thank you all!

re SATS: 1350 combined (830 V, 520 M)

re Frostburg, etc: not so worried about 'special' as size, I'm thinking he will need more support (and patience!!!) than the big state schools will provide.

My friend's daughter went to Nichols in Mass. She was a psych major and switched to English and will be attending law school. His gpa is in their range.

Is the 830 combined for CR and Writing?

Anyways, I agree with the person who recommended Nichols. It's a decent school that's pretty easy to get into.

sorry just CR
