College suggestions for my friend.

Hey guys,

This thread is for my friend who is not on CC but would like some suggestions for his reach, match, and safety colleges.

Basic stuffs:
International, Asian male, no need for FA, no hooks, no legacy

So, here's his stats:

SAT: around 1900, superscore would bring it up to around 2000
Subject Tests: 600s-700s - 3 subjects (can't remember which ones)
No APs (none offered at school)

GPA: 2.7 (a bad grade, I know, but he is using the excuse of having epilepsy which causes him to often miss school and can't focus on works, etc)

ECs: captain of volleyball team (2 years), theater, creates and sells iPhone applications, student govt, and some other minor stuffs

Awards: No major ones

Job experiences: website designer for a big car company in my country, some computer science things, some finance works, etc. (worked in pretty well known companies even by international standards)

Essays:writing one about epilepsy and how volleyball helps him cope with it, dunno about the rest

Teacher/Counselor Recs: average or slightly above average

Additional Rec: good/great

Thks for ur help :)

What is he interested in studying?

Computer Science

Does he have any idea where he wants to go to school? a particular state i.e California, New York, Texas, Florida, etc.? What size school does he want to attend?

Nope, he has no state/size/type of school/etc. preference. I think he’s gonna to apply to around 6 schools. I know it’s really broad but any suggestions would be appreciated.

bump…bump…bump…

Those stats suggest a state school or a smaller private school looking to fill out their incoming class … pick your location. Because he is international and would likely pay full tuition, it may help him slightly, but I would encourage him to go on the college confidential college search as a starting point, [College Search - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/).

Since he clearly has computer science skills already in use, he needs to play that up. His GPA is not competitive for schools that would be highly selective, so the big state schools may not want him as much as the smaller specialized state schools; there are several small private schools that would want to get their hands on a strong computer science person. To narrow all the options down to 6, you need to use a search tool to narrow it down, after all, there are over 3000 colleges in the US. Another tool to put you in the ballpark is ■■■■■■■■■■, and that one you can see a graph that shows where your stats fall relative to other students that have applied and been accepted a a specific college. Happy searching.

Thanks, will pass on the links to my friend.
