College Suggestions for strong academic, dancer needing diversity and scholarship?

I would greatly appreciate suggestions for a college list for my DD with this profile.
US citizen but studying outside the country
1530 sat (superscore)
IB - strong performer- 42-44 predicted
Dancer at a professional level and teaches too
Highly compassonate, volunteers.
Has one school leadership position that suits her well
Never pursued competitions/awards
Currently intrested in psychology and may do pre-med
prefers a school with higher diversity
scholarship or aid will be greatly appreciated so 529 can be used for med school. (we may qualify for aid as no income for over 2 years)

What might be a school that values her ? The top schools seem to want to see a “spike” or leadership or awards. She doesnt have those but is just a very good sincere globally aware kind and academically capable student who dances well.

Her high school is a high achieving international school with all top performers. Many with strong personal counselors hired privately. Not easy to stand out amongst them.

Do you have US state of residence?
How much of 529 could you spend per year?
Otherwise, see public universities with auto awards, U of Arizona, Alabama, West Virginia.
Or see “meet full need” colleges. Only a handful. Run net price calculators to see if your budget and their definition of your need match up.
See lists like 12 Colleges That Cover 100% of Your Financial Aid

Or see Wake Forest, U of Miami.

Is she intending to study dance? With no awards in dance, at the very least I think she will need to submit a video. Was she paid as a dancer?

I think a lot of schools will value her, but please clarify what her intended majors might be.

USC-Diverse, strong academics and excellent Kaufman School of Dance (offers dance minors if she doesn’t want a BFA). USC offers many scholarships.

My D was a Dance major at Ohio University and is currently in her 3rd year of her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. OU has a good dance program. They offer a BFA, a BA and 3 different minors in Dance. They are Modern Dance focused so if your looking for a program that is Ballet focused this won’t work for you. My D was a strong student and was able to get scholarships for her grades and for her being a Fine Arts major. Everyone’s financial situation is unique so there are scholarships tied to need. OU has a very liberal college vibe to it while being a full university. They are strong in the pre medical fields and have their own DO program. It’s worth looking into. My D loved(s) it. Good luck.

What type of dance? Ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap? Dance can be a spike.

U of Utah has a wonderful dance program, and a medical school. My sister is a psychologist who did her undergrad there and her roommate was a pro dancer. Your daughter might get aid and honors program there, and in-state tuition is super cheap. They’ll let students claim residency after one year. The campus is beautiful, and the diversity is better than you’d think. SLC is a wonderful city.

You might want to post your question on the dance majors section of this forum. The folks posting there have a lot of info about dance in college.

I would suggest looking at Butler University in Indianapolis. Very strong dance program and a very nice medium-sized school that gives pretty good merit.

Yes, and Butler also has good health sciences. Of course, Indiana U is also a renowned dance school and has a med school as well.

Consider Barnard and Smith.

For international diversity, an excellent psychology program and the potential for a merit scolarship, look into Mount Holyoke. You can read about its dance department here: https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/dance.

Get a copy of Dance Magazine’s college guide.

We need to know what type of dance!

Ohio State has a very highly rated dance program, and has many good opportunities for merit money, as does Rutgers, and Arizona State. Depending on your state of residence, UIUC has top notch dance and psych programs, but few scholarships for OOS applicants.

Case Western is worth a look, as well.

What is your state of residence?

What type of dance? Interested in a major/minor? Performance companies? Dance team? Is she working professionally?

OP stated her D dances at a professional level. It would be great if @mom2thing2 would return and give us some much needed information.

  1. Is she intending to MAJOR in dance? If so, what type of dance? Or what does she intend to study?
  2. Is she dancing professionally and getting paid?
  3. How much can you afford to pay annually?

I strongly recommend including a dance supplement if applying to non-audition schools for a BA or BS. That would include a video, a dance resume and a letter or two of recommendation related to dance (and work ethic, working with others etc.).

Her options are major in dance, double major in dance and psychology, major/minor, or BA/BS in psychology with dance as an extracurricular. Dance can even be off campus.

We really cannot answer without knowing what kind of dance. Off the top, Barnard has a good reputation for dance and, obviously, has great academics.

If she wants to do extracurricular dance, her options are many. I would add that the supplement can help even if she never dances on campus at all!

Sorry for the slow response. I didnt get any alerts to the replies so I just logged in now to see there were so many of them. I appreciate it.
She wont be pursuing dance as a major or minor .This is an indian classical dance and she performs at a professional level. This will continue to be her side passion. But yes she will submit a supplement. And certainly she will hope to engage with clubs that will help her continue nurturing this side of her.

What she is really interested in for undergrad is psychology for now. But she is unsure if this is a lasting or passing interest. She does think med school is where she may want to go after undergrad.

She can study psychology at just about any college in this country….and apply to medical school too.

I think what you need to find is a school with some strong clubs with your heritage, or perhaps a dance group off campus where she could continue this (as suggested above).

I still think a query on the dance majors forum could get you some direction WRT where this could happen.

For this interest, your daughter may want to research colleges that offer courses or course elements in the major branches of modern psychology, notably biological, clinical, cognitive, educational, developmental, personality, sensory and social. Preparation in research methods and statistics should be emphasized as part of the standard curriculum. Fieldwork opportunities also should be available.
