College Suggestions

I was wondering if anyone had some college suggestions for me!

One of the most important factors to consider is the price. My family is the average working class family, but at the same time our income is high enough that I wouldn’t be considered a lower class student. This makes it tricky because I need an ample financial aid package/scholarship to be able to attend college.

The most important factor is whether or not I can get in. My test scores aren’t that high, I only got a 31 on the ACT(Composite). I am, however, taking it again soon so hopefully that will improve. My Un-weighted GPA is a 3.8. My high school is a public school that isn’t very well-funded, so there are not as many AP courses available to take as I have seen at so many other schools. I took as many as I could but I am very worried that they will not be enough. These include AP US History, AP Euro, AP Gov, AP Lang & Comp, AP Lit, and AP Spanish 4. I have also taken honors pre-calculus, hon geometry, hon algebra 2, hon English 1&2, hon Spanish 3, hon ancient history, hon chemistry, and hon biology. I will also be taking Duel Enrollment Stats. The rest of my schedule is filled with choir and musical theatre–I have been in the honors choir and theatre at my school since freshman year.

I do a lot of things with music. I do not, however, want to study it.I have gone to All-State all 3 years with my school. I take private voice and piano lessons, and I used to take guitar lessons as well. I went to Governor’s School for the Arts where I had the lead role in the opera we performed there. I have participated in the youth choir for my city’s opera company in their productions of Mephistopheles and Hansel and Gretel. I was also the student assistant in one of my church’s youth musical theatre productions.

I have been involved at school and in the community since freshman year. I am a member of my city’s chapter of teen board(community service organization where we are required to get 50 hours in volunteer hours a year), of SGA(Officer in 2014), NHS, NSHSS, DECA–Where I spearheaded our chapter’s community involvement, Spanish Club(2014-2016), NEHS, and Honors Academy. I was also given the honor of representing my school at Girls State.

I would love to major in languages, international studies, economics(political or international), classics, or anthropology.

Please offer up any suggestions or advice you can.

Places that will possibly be under $20,ooo:

Ok. state, Nebraska, W. Va, South Florida, Alabama, Florida state, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Florida International, Texas Tech.

You do not need to be from a lower income family to qualify for significant financial aid.

Even your current ACT is quite good and would be at least average for all but about 40-50 colleges in the country.

You could try accessing the NPCs at schools that would be academically appropriate for you (but challenging admits) such as Wesleyan and Hamilton in order to see whether they might be affordable for your family.

That ACT score is awesome compared to mine. I kno you can get a good amount of aid because my family was in a similar situation with my brother. We are stable and make good money but thought financial aid would be an issue, but he got everything he needed to go there.

You need to run the net price calculator on the website of each school you are considering. @footballorbust, for various reasons, plenty of families can’t meet their EFCs even at colleges that “meet need”.
