College Support for ADD kids

Do you know of any colleges that offer support for an ADD diagnosis. High functioning teenager, but problems with organization and study skill. Will need a program or department to help. Appreciate any ideas you can offer. Not looking for a school that specializes in ADD, just solid support.

You should take this question to the Parents Forum (there is a quick link on the left-hand side of this screen). I think there already is an ADD thread there.

You also may want to look at the ADHD/LD Forum. It is inside the “High School” section, but most of the threads have to do with college. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen and then scroll down to find it.

Good luck!

Welcome, from another Minnesota Mom! I’m not sure how far away you are looking, but in Minnesota, Augsburg College is very well-known for its LD service; it is located in Minneapolis right across from the Univ of MN (west bank), it is fairly small, approx 1800 undergrads. This was the one school that DS’s hs counselor strongly recommends for students with LDs and ADD. DS has Asperger’s and executive function/organizational issues similar to ADD. In his case, he was no longer receiving any services or accommodations in hs (we actually closed his IEP in his jr yr) but since I was still concerned about how well he would transition to college, I also looked at the quality of LD services that were offered at schools he applied to. Augsburg was one of the few schools he ended up applying to, primarily as a safety/back up because of their disability services, size and proximity to our home (20 minutes away). [DS planned to study engineering which would have meant a 3-2 program at Augsburg and at the Univ of MN (where he was also accepted) so we decided against it in the end - too many transitions, plus he was already sold on the idea of doing co-ops which would have extended the time it would take to graduate]

A few of his friends with ADD attend Augsburg, however; one is on track to graduate this year and the other graduated early last spring. Both seem to have enjoyed their experiences there.

DS ended up going to Northeastern University in Boston; this was the only out of state school he applied to, primarily for its strong co-op program, but it is another school with good LD services and also offers a special fee-based program for students with LDs who need extra support beyond the more standard accommodations that are offered; one thing you will find is that many schools may offer fee-based LD programs for LD students who need extra supports (there are no extra fees for the services at Augsburg).

Here are a few links with additional information re Augsburg’s CLASS (LD) program:
