College Teams

I wanted to know if is possible to join a college's team (not intramural) after getting admitted. Is it possible or you can only join a team by getting recruited?

(not small colleges, but big universities or Ivy Leagues)

Thank you!!

You can walk on to the team. Contact the coaches and ask if they have a walk-on admission to their sport team. You’ll need to provide videos of you practicing or playing in a game, and a high school coach’s recommendation letter (saying why you are good or something).

As a walk-on, you will not have scholarship your first year, but may get an athletic scholarship your second year…if you play well.

As a basic rule, if you are not recruited and offered a Letter of Intent (LOI) in high school, you have to walk-on. It’s not easy walking on a team, but there’s a chance you’ll make it.

My older brother walked onto the University of Texas football team back in 2005 as a QB, but he quit the team shortly after the season was over (3wks after the '05 Rose Bowl). It’s a lot of work being on a college team (esp. Div 1), and you need to be real organized.

If you were good enough in high school then the quality colleges in your area would have been offering you scholarships to play for them. I can see you going to a small high school, and not getting recognized, or it’s quite possible you didn’t play sports in high school and just have an instinct to be a good athlete.

Looking at top Universities or Ivy League walking-on is pretty hard to accomplish, because of course you have to be good at what you do. If you believe that you are good enough contact the athletic director for that individual sport or even the head coach.
Here is a good way to get that done:

I know of some athletic programs have Walk-On days where anyone has consent from the coach to be considered a Walk-On participant will be allowed to try-out for the team. It all really depends on the sport and when it starts.

I guess to answer your question. No you don’t have to be recruited.

Here is a walk-on ehow for football but is very similar to any other sport:

There are numerous stories of players being walk-ons in college and then going pro, so don’t give up hope!
